And they're not small tracts of land either. Basically, a lot of US states are their own freaking countries.

Not that that Tex-ass is surprised by that. Or CA I suppose.

The unorganized borough of Alaska (part of the state that has no local "county" type government) is bigger than Texas.

Kentucky has 120 counties as each county seat was supposed to be within a day's horse ride from any point in the county. The legislature offered incentives to convince counties to merge as some county governments are fiscally unsustainable due to very small property tax bases. None bit.

I don't know why the state needed to offer an incentive - they could have simply forced the issue: counties are creatures of the state, they have no individual sovereignty.

I'm abused that a state like Iowa has 100 counties and only 3.1-3.2 million people. That's an average of 31,000 people per county. 31,000 people hardly counts as a town in some states...
