Did you know GAP owns Banana Republic and Old Navy?

gopunk

Lifer
i had no idea until i read about it in my textbook today... not that i care much since i don't shop there anyways, but i just found it interesting.

yeh, its an example of high end, middle end, low end branding. (from most expensive down - Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, in case you couldn't figure out what I meant.)
You can see it all the time in the auto industry.

Yes.

It's their whole 3-tier philosophy.

Banana Republic = $$$, reasonable quality clothes
Gap = $$, mediocre quality clothes
Old Navy = $, rags after one wash cycle

The limited also used to own Abercrombie and Fitch but spun them off until the became independent. I know at one time the Limited used to own stock of A&F. Ah I researched this one time when I was going to get a job at structure. Quite interesting actually.

At the Galleria Mall in Dallas, Texas the mall has one end with Bannana Republic on bottome floor, Gap on teh second and Old Navy on the third. Right on top of each other with their own elevevator/escaltor bank.

Thought that was a tad too obvious.

I heard a piece on the radio about how Gap was pricing itself out of the market, because people that shopped at Gap were tending towards Old Navy to save money or towards Banana Republic for the higher quality/image.

Don't know how true this is though.

They actually created the Old Navy strategy because they corporately decided that it was not feasible to further saturate the market with Gap stores. In some markets (Manhattan, for example), you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Gap store. I actually really like the Gap and BR, both of which offer good-quality clothing cheap, but ON is not for me.

Yep

Just like Ford Owns Lincoln and Mercury

or GM owns Pontiac, Cadillac, Chevy, Geo, Saturn..etc

Or Swatch owns Breguet, Omega, Blancpain, Rado...etc (upper end watch brands)

And you should see the list of companies which Phillip Morris owns it is mind blowing...this is a very common occurance in business.

I found out a long time ago when I was applying for a job at the Gap. They have all three logos on top of their application

SO TRUE! And it's like they all showed up within one year. Visiting, I really noticed this. One year, regular old stores. The next year GAP everywhere.
