The "No I would like to/if there was a need I would" is not a good choice, in my opinion. For instance, I would not like to be in the military but if the USA were invaded and needed people quick in the military I would join.

There is nothing to miss about endless police calls, long field days, extra duties and having to put up with bullshit every day. The only thing I miss are unlimited ammos and my friends.

Okay, I guess I'm supposed to list my MOS's.

13E10: Field Artillery Fire Direction Control Specialist

Then I went to OCS and became 13E: Field Artillery Officer

It is absolutely the best thing I ever did to change my life for the better. It definitely straightened me out and taught me responsibility and gave me a purpose like I never had before or since.

I didn't, and I wish I had. Back in the late 70s when I was of age, joining the military was a very unpopular thing for middle-class white kids to do - and quite often the ones who enlisted did so because they were ordered to by a judge. It was a different time.

But in hindsight I see I really needed to learn the things the military had to teach: discipline, teamwork, toughness, motivation and patriotism. And unlike today, I never would've come within 1000 miles of actual combat.

So I always try to give respect to the soldiers and vets I meet, unless they're complete assholes.

edit: To answer the poll, if I was 20 years younger I'd enlist, absolutely. If I was 15 years younger I'd give it very serious thought.

Actually, I wanted ot go into the Navy but I was talked out of it. I'm happy with my current situation now. I would go into the military without question if there was a need, though. Though, I think the only need would be defending our soil if someone attacked.

The obligatory army service was erased the year I'd have enlisted, so I didn't join the military.
Low wages, poor living standards, no chance of actually defending my country. Pointless.

Royal Navy, Great Britain for 3 years, 4 months & 29 days. Best thing i've ever done and if I had the opportunity to go back I would drop everything to do so.
