did you have a bike with foot brakes?

spanky

when i was a kid, i had a bike with foot brakes. i always preferred them over hand brakes. do they still make bikes with foot brakes? i dont ever recall seeing an adult bike with foot brakes.

Hell yeah I had a bike with foot brakes. I used to love skidding with those. Get going real fast down a hill then slam on my foot brakes and skid for 40 feet.
I went through alot of tires.

I did. It was my first two wheel bike. It was pink, purple and white and had a unicorn painted on the seat and had shiney white streamers.

It was a good bike.

my dahon has a coater brake, I got it used for $100 shipped on eBay. It has saved me at least twice in carfare getting to and from work.

Heck ya...my old blue dirt bike.

The great part was breaking hard by standing up and leaning on the right foot....sometimes you put a little hop into it and really clinched it down and leave a long skid on the pavement.

OH yeah. I remember having competitions with friends to see who could leave the longest skid mark.

yeah, that was the best part by far.

Of course, I managed to really expound on that on my piece of crap $10 road bike later on...I would be riding down a hill to my apartment, and after CAREFULLY checking for traffic, both in front of and behind me, I would lock the back tire, skid 20 feet down, then with a careful lean I would whip the bike around 90 degrees and keep riding into the apartment parking lot, without falling or letting my feet touch the ground 🙂 It left awesome hooked skid marks.

Shoot! that would have been AWESOME!
it is funny you should ask that because i loved unicorns when i was little and i got a rod of sorts and tried to make it sharp like a unicorn and i taped it on to my bike, but it was not a good idea because when it fell off, it got stuck in the spokes and i ended up flying over the handle bars 😱

Ditto. This and being too much of a daredevil led to some bad accidents >_<

lol...I used to do the same thing. Great fun. 😀

I believe my StingRay actually had drum brakes on the rear tire.

although I can't remember if there was a lever or not.

so cool, the bike had like 3" wide racing slicks on the rear.

They're terrible things because it's much harder to suddenly reverse the direction of your peddling and apply force in the opposite direction than to just pull with your hand. I remember when I had one, I was riding around as fast as I could in an empty parking lot, tried to brake when I got close to a curb, and found my feet in a position where it was hard to turn them the opposite way, so I slammed into the curb at full speed and flew over the handlebars.

Damn, I did the exact same thing. LOL Had a bike with the banana seat and wide low handle bars, great for off-roading. Ha, when I think of it I was probably a pioneer in mountain biking back in the 70's.

It could have ended real bad. One day a buddy of mine where hauling a$$ down a hill and skidding on a big gravel soccer field surrounded by chicken wire. Well, the chain jumped just at the base of the hill and I slammed head first in the fence. Bent the front wheel, fork and frame. Bike was a total loss. 😛 My dad asked what happened, I sad 'just had a small crash in the woods'.

Good times, good times. 😀
