My parents were pretty wealthy. We had lots of money, but the area we lived in was right on the edge between a good middle-class area and the hood basically.

I didn't go to a very good school in the area beside where I lived. Most of my friends ended up in gangs or dropping out of school. I got in fights almost daily. I was like most of my friends, I didn't have money, nice things, clothes, etc. Imagine a white kid trying to fit in with a bunch of natives, filipinos and black guys.

In HS I decided I had enough of the sh!tty area so I bussed to a shool on the other side of the city for grade 10, 11 and 12.

Needless to say I didn't fit in very well. Grade 10, 11 and part of 12 I didn't have many friends, until I started to fit in. It takes a while to adjust to an entirely different atmosphere.

I've got a bunch of close friends now and I'm not involved in gangs, illegal activites or any of the bad stuff.

I'm 14 months away from my B.A at the university.

Yes. I live in Oak Cliff. There is a rap song about it that goes "Oak Cliff, yea, that's my hood, yea." It was popular.

Born, raised and still live in the Bronx so yea.. I grew up in the hood..sorta. I lived in fairly decent neighborhoods and steered clear of bad hoods (south bronx, hunts point..etc) and I never got into any trouble. The public schools I attended were all terrible though and I didn't learn a damn thing.

parents got divored young, and with no child support rolling in from a deadbeat dad my mom had to move to chula vista. she would work 10-12 hour days and i had to watch my sister at a young age. every night ambulances and cop cars would roll by with their lights flashing constantly through my bedroom window and i wasnt allowed outside a lot. a bit later moved to clairemont where we lived in a gang neighborhood next to :gasp: gang member. drive-by's every few months and a lot of those bullets would hit the side of our house. even a hit one year on christmas eve. visiting my dad was no better, walking past gang members and bums going to the ghetto liquor with a sandwich baggy full of nickels to buy some milk.

im glad i no longer live on those streets. dont worry, im not planing to cut a rap album glorifying my old hood. :D but i still wont forget where i came from and the struggles and such me and my family went through to get out.

I grew up in Venice, CA. It was not as bad as some places but it was pretty tough, I was attacked often, and we found a few bodies in the alley behind our house over the years. A lot of people I knew when growing up died violently or were lost to drugs.
