inspired by that other thread.
my parents gave me $10/week from 2nd grade through junior high. when I started high school, that got bumped up to $50/week, but most of that was used to pay for train/bus/cab fare for getting to school and buying lunch every day.
I worked during high school, but my parents kept giving me an allowance and encouraged me to put the money I made from working into a savings account (which I did, and which came very much in handy when I chose not to work any kind of real job in college, but lived off my savings instead for spending money). I stopped getting an allowance when I graduated high school (17).
edit: I didn't do anything for my allowance. I was expected to do things whenever my parents asked me to, but I can't ever remember my allowance being withheld unless I did something exceptionally awful.
