inspired by that other thread.

my parents gave me $10/week from 2nd grade through junior high. when I started high school, that got bumped up to $50/week, but most of that was used to pay for train/bus/cab fare for getting to school and buying lunch every day.

I worked during high school, but my parents kept giving me an allowance and encouraged me to put the money I made from working into a savings account (which I did, and which came very much in handy when I chose not to work any kind of real job in college, but lived off my savings instead for spending money). I stopped getting an allowance when I graduated high school (17).

edit: I didn't do anything for my allowance. I was expected to do things whenever my parents asked me to, but I can't ever remember my allowance being withheld unless I did something exceptionally awful.

I got $10 - $15 to mow the grass from age 12-15 which I usually spent on music. Got a job at 16.

I will give my sons an allowance when they are old enough to comprehend money. the oldest is six and is not motivated by money so he does his chores to earn time on the Gamecube.

I got an allowance depending on the chores I did around the house.

I never got an allowance. Until I got a job I had to ask for the money, but my parents were pretty good about it. Basically if I had done the chores and helped around the house I could get $10 here or $20 there. But that was about it.

I'm not sure how we are going to handle our daughter yet. I guess it is going to depend on her somewhat.

Of course I also never had a curfue growing up. Pissed my older brother and younger sister off beyond belief. I was given that as I made sure my parents actually knew where I was. Giving that info freely was more than worth it to be curfue free.

I never got an "allowance"

If I wanted something, I could ask, but at certain ages having unmonitored money can be a risk!

I never had a set allowance, my parents would just give me money to do stuff on weekend or when they would drop me off at friends houses, they were pretty cool about it all really.

Pretty much at 14 though they cut me off from most everything they bought for me, I was working at a car wash doing detailing on weekend and during the summers and making up to a couple hundred a day though so I can understand why.

I got an allowance, in theory, but in practice, Mom usually forgot. :( I think it was supposed to be twenty bucks a month or something like that.

Never got money for allowance after I started working part time, when I was about 14.

My 8 year old gets five bucks a week if he keeps his room clean, plus another five or so for mowing and extra chores. Rule is he has to save 50% (savings or brokerage acct) and can spend half if he wants.

I give my 13 yo $10 per week and my 8 year old $5. They do chores around the house to earn their allowance.

No. I received money as gifts (and occasionally stole out of my dad's wallet, but I no longer do so), but I never received a regular allowance.

If I have children, I'll give them a small allowance until I feel they're ready to start working.

$20/week back in the 80's when I was in my teens. And that could actually buy quite a bit back then.

I got a $1.10/day (for school lunch) unless my mom was too drunk to leave it on the table before she passed out.
