Did you get a new car when you were 16?

Many of my friends mention the new cars they will be getting. True one of them is only getting a Toyota Corolla new, but why do parents put money into a new car for a child? His mom has a van and she is going to get a new one. If I was their parent I'd give the van to my friend so you only have to buy one car instead of two so you can get the son a corolla.

There are a few other scenarios, but I'm just wondering why they don't give them something to learn and practice on before going straight to a new car.... I'm happy I get a 91 accord... stick shift

Pretty much the same here. My first ride was a beat-to-hell '74 Datsun pickup when I was 16 (in '87). $300 cash IIRC

I didn't have my license at 16. The summer after I turned 17 I was able to use mummy's car to meet friends and such.

I think I should have said gotten a new car from their parents because in my mind, buying your own car with your money is also justified since you earned it.

I've never owned a new car. When I was 16 I bought a 12 year old pickup truck for $250 with my own money. My dad was nice enough to help me get it in driveable condition.

Yes, at the time I got an '00 Neon which was new. And no, my parents didn't buy it for me. I had my own job making good money when I was 16 and leased it :)

In retrospect it was worth more to me anyway in everything I learned from fixing the POS when it broke which was often. :D

Nope. My first car was a '78 Ford Granada and I was older and got it myself. My parents couldn't afford it and I used my mom's car until I got mine.

Sorry I missed that part... I would definitely think twice about buying my child (with my money) a brand new car ... young/inexperienced drivers, no matter how careful (or not) are very risky. I should know... I've repaired my truck twice (let's leave it at that). ;) But if they made the money and bought their own new car, more power to them.

I got an 81 Z28 camaro at 16. I miss the car now as I have sold it to make way for my 96 civic. The camaro was a nice car but it sucked gas like crazy and it was getting pretty rusty.

My first car was a 71 VW Beetle. My parents got it three years ago when I was 15. Still running strong. Will drive it until the day I die.
