To the people who have told me to hold triangle/Y...I already do. It still gives me trouble.

i loved vice city and it's 1980's retro theme. i couldn't really get into san andreas though because i thought it was just a rehash. i hope when i get gta4 it will be a little bit more fresh than what's been said in this thread

I played GTA3 and GTA Vice City to the point where I've pretty much memorized both games, but by the time I got to GTA San Andreas, I was feeling my interest begin to falter. Also of note, the camera as it follows your car. It faithfully stayed right behind your car in GTA3 and Vice City, but for some reason became extremely lazy in San Andreas and GTA4, to where you had to manually move it back behind your vehicle to see what's in front of you. I can't tell you how many times in ran into a parked car (or police cruiser) simply because the camera is too slow to re-center itself behind my car. Anyone else notice that?

When I drive I constantly adjust the camera manually. It makes driving easier and it looks cool too. Honestly, I get around town just fine in-game. The realism and difficulty only lead to a much greater sense of satisfaction and fulfillment for when I pull of really awesome maneuvers.

As far as Vice city vs San Andreas; I distinctly remember the one time I went back to VC after being accustomed to SA and I found the car controls of VC to be so unrealistic that it put me off even playing further and utterly smashed most of the nostalgia I had for the game. I still think Tommy Vercetti is the best protagonist of the series. But wrt driving simulation, I'd have to say that the GTA series has done nothing but steadily improve from the first game. Here I have to be honest and say that when I first played GTA2, the slightly more realistic acceleration/gear shifting threw me off at first, and like some of you, I longed for the more simple mechanics of the first game. I know better now. Progress is nice.

edit: Also, count me in the ever shrinking minority that likes my games to be challenging.

Happens to me all the time. I hit the right control stick down to look behind me for a split second then release. The camera re-centers itself when you are back to your normal view.

It would be really smart to have put in an option to change the rigidness of the camera.

I've played every single GTA but haven't played any more than a few hours except for Vice City. Once you're done exploring the city and causing chaos, the missions are boring.

Keeping my friends happy is really tiresome. I've decided to stop, as long as their missions are all done. Dwayne called again and then whined when I was late so I shot him, but he was merely injured. He called from the hospital for a ride, I said no, then he messaged later in some pathetic way he expected I'd still have picked him up. I am at 40% approval for him. I wish I could get rid of him for good, maybe if I keep calling him for hanging out and never show up he'll drop me.

GTA4 bored me after about 60% in. SR2 has kept me and continues to do so even tho I have finished the proper missions and 70% of the minigames. I am at 87% total completion and play every few days just for the hell of it. GTA: San Andreas had me hooked for about 2 years! I still play it every now and then. GTA4 took itself too seriously IMO. Havent touched in since last June.

I just ignore most of the "friend" elements of the game. The missions are pretty awesome for the most part, though a few are decidedly annoying and boring.

Me too. I kept the two girlfriends, (kiki the lawyer and carmen the nurse) for their benefits, but they're kind of unreliable. Though I sort of like the unpredictable nature of it.. Call my gf and maybe she can get the cops off my back.. maybe not.

Also I recently tried to play the game over again from the start without intentionally breaking any laws, unless required by the story.. No stealing cars or assaulting people on the street... That lasted for like 10 minutes. I think I might just be a bad person.

It was pretty good, there was a lot of nice advancements in GTA IV, although i have to say they may be more neccesary than nice, like the satnav thing on the minimap telling you where to go, thats great but if that wasent there the game would be murder as liberty city is huge compared to what it was in GTA III. The story was good enough, i would like to have seen much more of the "liberty city 5 families" but instead your stuck with the weakest family, thats fine for a starting point if it leads to meeting more people but it didnt. Every other GTA game you end up ruling the city (maybe with the exception of GTA III, but you still kill some major players in GTA III) but in GTA IV after it all your still just a hired gun basically. The friends thing is frickin annoying, good feature dont get me wrong but it should be optional and they shouldnt call you. Also since taxis can take you where you want to go why the hell cant your lazyass friends why do i always have to drive them everywhere, roman has his own taxi company ffs and he makes me drive him places... Also i just realized i dont think you get paid for vigilante missions or anything like that, it just counts towards the completion % which i dont give a toss about i want more money for more RPG rounds to kill more of everything, completion % is irrellivent.

The major kick in the balls was the lack of a tank.... WTF! Theres been a tank in every single GTA, GTA 1 had that tank that blew up after running over 20 cars, annoying but it was there and had a useable main gun, GTA 2 had a much better tank in that cars didnt kill it, GTA III and Vice city's rhino was awesome and san andrea's rhino with a new skin and name was cool too. Whys it not in GTA IV?! Lame! I will not be getting the DLC if there is no tank in it....

Overall its a great game, you can do worse than GTA IV, but yeah theres a few annoying things in it. I just bought saints row 2 because apparently you can get naked and flash people then spray them with sewage or something, sounds fun. GTA IV couldve used more of that.

I finally stuck the GTA IV disc back in my PS3 yesterday after about a 6 month break. Still stuck on the last mission. This time it was the 7th or 8th RPG that took down my helicopter.

The mission doesn't seem that difficult, it's just more annoying to have to chase that Escalade all the way across the city and then get into a small war at the house just to get to Pegorino, then chase him on the bike, then chase him with the helicopter. By the time I get to the helicopter I'm basically worn out...have done some really stupid stuff too - the first time I missed the jump into the helicopter, another time I got into the helicopter and accidentally hit UP to jump out, another time I forgot I was controlling it after I got in, and ran the damn thing right into the ocean...

I just beat this yesterday...you can't be low when following the boat or the rpg will definitly kill you. Go high as hell and follow the boat...game completed

1st, the girlfriends aren't unpredictable at all. They basically help you once per date from what I've seen. If you take them out, then ask for help they're usually fine with it. If you ask for help again w/out taking them out then they will most likely say no.

2nd, why bother playing a game legally? The point of games is to do something you normally wouldn't be able to do without consequences. If I wanted to obey laws all day I wouldn't be playing games. Maybe it's just me, but I use them as a fun escape not an alternate life.

Cool, I'll have to test that out. I thought it was more than Kiki couldn't do anything for you if you have more than 2 stars, but I couldn't figure out wtf carmen's problem was...

just wanted to try something different. Also it came after reading a post on another forum where some goodie-two-shoes weirdo complained that they felt like such a horrible person for having taken part in a game where running down pedestrians was as "good thing" when I realized that at no point in the story does the game prompt you to break laws or kill innocent bystanders. Every person you have to kill to complete the story is already a criminal so there really is the possibility of playing the game in an entirely lawful fashion..

It just turns out that it's incredibly boring to do so.. Time consuming too, since early on you have to walk everywhere.

Like i said, maybe this means I'm a bad person... you too :)

I really think its funny that for all the hoopla about how horrible of an influence the game GTA is, when the developers haven't forced anyone to do anything wrong. The player is the one who decides to pick up hookers and then murder them after the fact. There's no hooker killing missions in game and there never have been.

...You've been paying attention to the subject matter of the missions, right?

Most of the missions are "drive from point a to point b and sometimes C". If you NEED a car for a mission its provided. If a mission prompts you to kill someone, they're almost always "bad guys" anyway.

About the only mission I can think of that calls for outright breaking the law is the one with the bank robbery and even then the only people you end up killing are police, who were shooting at your first.. Its tenuous I know, but I'd call it self defense. ;)
