That said, GTA4 has some really fun multiplayer modes that are definitely worth checking out...

I'm still gonna give it another shot I think.
However, after the polish of Fallout 3, I don't see how IGN gave this a 10, if only for the strange last-second render issue; it makes going through unknown alleys a very risky proposition! I am running from the HD, btw.
I wish I could mind-erase my GTA 3 experience. Then this would be nicer!
Complete opposite of your experience. Rented Fallout 3, couldn't stand it. Story's lame, everything's pointless, characters have no soul whatsoever. Loved the GTA series since PSOne, have all the GTA games, GTA4 is amazing. GTA:SA was way too long for my liking. I know some people like to compare their dollar spent on a game to hours of play time. I'm not one of those people. I look for games w/ great production value, attention to details, and characters depth and development.

GTA IV was over-rated and over-hyped.
THIS X 10.I was also frustrated by the fact that I would spend 25-45 min on one mission just to fail it, try it over a few times and I end up putting in 2hrs on a game and getting nothing accomplished.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't find GTA 4 all that great.
I bought it, played it, got frustrated with the driving (too floaty) and having to replay missions over and over. But the babysitting of relationship's was just annoying and just wasn't fun.
F-bombs. Too many. I know i am probably in the minority of this, but i thought the amount of profanity actually started to detract from the game.
When the well runs dry of current gaming, i might go back and try it again.....but i doubt it.

Yeah the driving was pretty annoying with 95% of the cars on the road. A pretty big downgrade from previous GTAs. Replaying missions is/was only a problem on the larger missions. Some mid-mission checkpoints would have been great.
The relationship thing wasn't vital to the game, so if you found it annoying you just didn't do it. You didn't have to 'babysit' anything. You just got some small perks for being friendly.
This had MUCH less profanity than San Andreas, so it sounds like you're new to the series. The profanity fit well IMO. Criminals will swear, so you can expect a game centralizing around criminals to be full of 'dirty' language. Nothing seemed overdone or out of place here.

I actually really like GTA4. While I don't think its GOTY, I've really enjoyed the story and the city. The missions need some sort of checkpoint system so I dont drive across thee entire city for 20 minutes, get into a 10 minute gunfight, and then die, to restart the whole thing over again. Buying back the ammo to keep firing guns in these missions is hella expensive.

GTA for the PS2 (the first one) ...
I meant first for PS2; I played gta2 on the pC>Does it bother anyone else when people refer to GTA3 as "the first" GTA game? As if the 3 in the title isn't a big enough clue that this is in fact the second sequel in an already successful franchise.

Same. The only thing I thought it needed was some save points during the missions, and a combat system that didnt rely on lock-ons. But the story was good, the characters were great, and the animation and environment is outstanding. It might not win the awards for best technical graphics, but it's about as close to a perfect rendition of NYC that you'll get this generation. There was just so much to do that it was a bit overwhelming, and perhaps it could have used a little more focus, but it's still an outstanding achievement in gaming if you look past the story mode. The multiplayer, specifically the racing, is also top notch once you get accustomed to it.
I can imagine I wouldnt love the game nearly as much if it wasnt my own neighborhood that I'm tearing through, but the game was just magic to me. I hope its not another five years before they go back to liberty city, there's still plenty of NYC that they didnt touch - how could they leave out the east village?? Could do without jersey though.![]()
If I could take only one game to a desert island, GTA 4 would be it. Can't wait for the expansion.
Professional reviewers don't really _live_ replay value, which is where I think some of the disconnect comes from. They play a game, (hopefully) beat it, review it, and move on to the next game. What, to them, might have a reasonable amount of replay value might not be so amazing to most gamers.Originally posted by: arredondo
The stellar reviews this game got from professional organizations - especially the high graphic scores - has convinced me that there was a TON of under-the-table money being spent to over hype this garbage. It is easily the most over-rated video game of all time.
