Definitely. Better yet, spend $20 and give a copy to a friend. Co-op is where the game shines.

That said, GTA4 has some really fun multiplayer modes that are definitely worth checking out...

However, after the polish of Fallout 3, I don't see how IGN gave this a 10, if only for the strange last-second render issue; it makes going through unknown alleys a very risky proposition! I am running from the HD, btw.

I wish I could mind-erase my GTA 3 experience. Then this would be nicer!

Complete opposite of your experience. Rented Fallout 3, couldn't stand it. Story's lame, everything's pointless, characters have no soul whatsoever. Loved the GTA series since PSOne, have all the GTA games, GTA4 is amazing. GTA:SA was way too long for my liking. I know some people like to compare their dollar spent on a game to hours of play time. I'm not one of those people. I look for games w/ great production value, attention to details, and characters depth and development.

pretty much the same for me... except i bought fallout 3 instead of renting it :(

I have so far finished like 35% of it and haven't touched it in months. I'm sure I'll get back to it at some point because it isn't bad, it just isn't great.

It is the most overrated game of all time.

Crackdown
Saints Row 1
Saints Row 2

are all more fun than GTA4.

YES VERY BORING!!!!!

I actually loaded it up and played a bit this weekend because I'm done with Fable 2 and GOW2 single player so I figured I should go back and try and get more done.

Along with agreeing with what was said above I got bored with the game right away, the story seemed slow and there wasn't much to keep my interest in continuing, I was also frustrated by the fact that I would spend 25-45 min on one mission just to fail it, try it over a few times and I end up putting in 2hrs on a game and getting nothing accomplished. Dunno, maybe I just suck at the game, but I thought some of the missions were pretty tough, especially the stupid chase ones.

All the GTA games I've played are a lot of fun for a few hours then incredibly boring.

THIS X 10.

I did that this morning with the Final Destiniation mission. I'd drive from where I was given the mission to its location, which takes a few minutes, then the second the cutscene would finish before I was supposed to cap somebody I'd get mowed down. The driving around over and over to repeat a mission gets hella old.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't find GTA 4 all that great.

I bought it, played it, got frustrated with the driving (too floaty) and having to replay missions over and over. But the babysitting of relationship's was just annoying and just wasn't fun.

F-bombs. Too many. I know i am probably in the minority of this, but i thought the amount of profanity actually started to detract from the game.

When the well runs dry of current gaming, i might go back and try it again.....but i doubt it.

Yeah the driving was pretty annoying with 95% of the cars on the road. A pretty big downgrade from previous GTAs. Replaying missions is/was only a problem on the larger missions. Some mid-mission checkpoints would have been great.

The relationship thing wasn't vital to the game, so if you found it annoying you just didn't do it. You didn't have to 'babysit' anything. You just got some small perks for being friendly.

This had MUCH less profanity than San Andreas, so it sounds like you're new to the series. The profanity fit well IMO. Criminals will swear, so you can expect a game centralizing around criminals to be full of 'dirty' language. Nothing seemed overdone or out of place here.

I actually really like GTA4. While I don't think its GOTY, I've really enjoyed the story and the city. The missions need some sort of checkpoint system so I dont drive across thee entire city for 20 minutes, get into a 10 minute gunfight, and then die, to restart the whole thing over again. Buying back the ammo to keep firing guns in these missions is hella expensive.

I liked reloading my save whenever I failed. It didn't help the pain of having to do the tedious parts of the mission over, but I could just re-use the same bullets and guns.

My favorite thing about 3 was that it still included the top down angle as an option. :p

Besides that nitpick, I agree with the OP.. GTA4 looks great, but it's otherwise a borefest. The story is alright, but there's not much else to do besides stirring up trouble with the police. I miss the taxi-cab missions.

For me this was probably the biggest disappointment game of the year.

I tried so hard to get into this game. I've restarted playing this about 3 times now, but it's just not a game that I enjoy playing. I guess I'm not really into the gangsta lifestyle.

I meant first for PS2; I played gta2 on the pC>

This game, could it annoy me anymore: I just entered a deathmatch game that I was not in. By this I mean I watched all the other players fighting and I could stand in front of them, shoot them, etc. but was 100% uninvolved in the level. Also, the two times I've tried to leave multiplayer games it hangs on the "loading". It will just "load" forever and nothing happens. How stupid is that?

I felt this way with the 3rd one.

I loved the 2nd on on the PS2 and played it to the end but the 3rd one I got bored with after a few days of playing and gave it up. Just to much of the same.

Same. The only thing I thought it needed was some save points during the missions, and a combat system that didnt rely on lock-ons. But the story was good, the characters were great, and the animation and environment is outstanding. It might not win the awards for best technical graphics, but it's about as close to a perfect rendition of NYC that you'll get this generation. There was just so much to do that it was a bit overwhelming, and perhaps it could have used a little more focus, but it's still an outstanding achievement in gaming if you look past the story mode. The multiplayer, specifically the racing, is also top notch once you get accustomed to it.

I can imagine I wouldnt love the game nearly as much if it wasnt my own neighborhood that I'm tearing through, but the game was just magic to me. I hope its not another five years before they go back to liberty city, there's still plenty of NYC that they didnt touch - how could they leave out the east village?? Could do without jersey though. :p

If I could take only one game to a desert island, GTA 4 would be it. Can't wait for the expansion.

No doubt I bet those who live in "Liberty City" would like it more :)

I have been finding multiplayer very frustrating. I don't normally suck so bad but being at bottom of the board is really depressing and n00btastic. It seems like multiplay is entirely tactics and very little actual shooting skill with the autoaim. I guess I just need to get used to that aspect of it. There is a great satisfaction running into somebody and having them fly over the hood, but I wish there was a way, via button smashing or other, to speed the rate at which I stand up when knocked over. I literally curse him to get the F up after getting knocked over!

Wow, nikko moves hella fvcking slow when he needs to go quickly. I don't know why he can jump out of a car at high speed quickly but if he's going 5 mph and I ask him to get out he takes like fully five seconds. I get out of my own car IRL when going to the store faster than that.

The stellar reviews this game got from professional organizations - especially the high graphic scores - has convinced me that there was a TON of under-the-table money being spent to over hype this garbage. It is easily the most over-rated video game of all time.

Professional reviewers don't really _live_ replay value, which is where I think some of the disconnect comes from. They play a game, (hopefully) beat it, review it, and move on to the next game. What, to them, might have a reasonable amount of replay value might not be so amazing to most gamers.

IMHO, the pros are right more than they're wrong, and they've actually played enough games for their opinions to have some sort of meaning. Being told Gears of War 2 is Game of the Year when all the person has played is that and Resistance 2... well, that's not an opinion with a lot of backing.
