In regards to my previous message: Figured it out. I was only installing from the CD's I had and not running the update from their website. Once I ran the US update and re-ran the widescreen mod, it worked this time!

ARGH!

I have BG2+expansion, and despite the greatness of the game I never played much of it. Not because it was old, my brother bought it when it was still on the shelves. Just didn't have the attention span at the time (I think I was 9). I also didn't know all rolls aren't equal value on my first character, and once I found that out I was "deep" into the story and significantly pissed.

I picked up BG1 (no expansions) and the mod does nothing for it. Is there any way I can stop the stretchiness? I've tried messing with the CCC settings, but it didn't seem to have any effect.

*shakes fist at widescreen monitor*

I got it working on XP with BG2 and the expansion. Currently playing through the SP campaign with a friend. Rocking the Gnome barbarian dual-wielding bastard swords

My friend started a Monk, but decided to abandon him and go with an Assassin since he was getting destroyed over and over heh. Maybe I'll try to talk him back into the Monk.

at the end of ToB, my monk had an AC of -13, -22 in slayer form, and was virtually immune to spells (90 SR).

only fire giants and other uber-monsters could kill me.

Maybe I'll let him continue the Assassin and rock a Monk myself :D

Monk? Really? Never tried one, but I guess I should. A berserker/mage is my character of choice.

I never actually finished BG1. Both that and TFTSC I couldn't manage the final end-of-game boss battle, put it to one side and never got back to it, so I have no idea what the final end of the story is.

Come to think of it, that was also true of Quake, Serious Sam 2 and Doom3 ROE. I seem to do that a lot.

Personally I've always been a fan of the dual class Kensai / Mage. Get the Kensai up to lvl 13 or so, then dual class over to Mage. You get all the bonuses from not wearing armor as a Kensai, the hp and saving throws of a fighter, the extra attacks, Kai ability, and weapon proficiencies of the Kensai with the magic of the Wizard, it's an awesome combo. Plus some of the Mage spells will actually enhance the Kensai's ability even more to do combat. Awesome fun if you have the patience.

I have been playing this like mad recently since I had heard about the widescreen mod. I ended up uninstalling everything, and reinstalling from scratch, then installing a mod called EasyTutu after installing the widescreen mod. Works like a champ and fixes many of the broken quests and dialog in the game.

While you are at it, checkout some of these mods for the Infinity Engine games (the engine that runs Baldur's Gate I / II, IceWind Dale, and PlaneScape: Torment).

Baldur's Gate (and Tales of the Sword Coast)

Baldur's Gate 2
  • Baldur's Gate 2 FixPack
    • Provides fixes for most of the remaining bugs in the game that go unfixed in the official patch, also adds various tweaks to improve gameplay.
  • Unfinished Business, adds back in several pieces of cut content
  • Ascension, a mod written by a bioware developer that makes the ending of ToB what it would have been had they time to polish it.

IceWind Dale

Icewind Dale 2

Dang wish I still had my BG1,BG2, IWD1, IWD2, and Temple of elemental evil... Now I just call up my old friends and say "hey you busy? still got my dice, and books, wanna meet up and roll a campaign together?" Those were the good old days, heck I still play Dungeons and Dragons the old fashion way:laugh: yet I Wished gamestop would still sell those kind of old school rpg pc games.. I guess a pencil, an eraser, some paper, some dice, and a book *u know what I mean* will do for now:thumbsup:

Awesome links. I knew about EasyTutu and the BG2 fixpack but not the others.

So far I'm having a blast replaying this classic. I feel kind of silly, runny SLI 8800 GT's (G92) + 4 GB of RAM on Vista 64, and here I am replaying this game that came out something like 10 years ago, but it's fun as hell especially with the Easytutu mods installed.

I had always meant to replay BG and BG2 all the way through, as the first time I played each I missed many of the sidequests. The Easytutu mod order of install if you want to get the widescreen mod working (or at least the way I had to install to get it working, after uninstalling everything and reinstalling):

Make sure that you choose custom install on each item that allows it, and install all movies etc., basically any option to include anything make sure you install everything.
1) install BG
2) install BG ToSC
3) Patch BG ToSC to latest patch
4) install BG2
5) Install BG2 ToB
6) patch BG2 ToB to latest patch
7) Install EasyTutu
8) In separate directory where Easytutu was installed, run the widescreen mod.

The first time I tried installing everything I somehow messed up the order somewhere and the game was unstable and I couldn't get the widescreen mod to work on the BG1 played on BG2 engine. Uninstalling everything, and then reinstalling in the above listed order, fixed this issue for me.

The nice thing about EasyTutu is that it creates it's own separate directory to where you install all the patches and mods. I would recommend installing all the mods before they start the campaign. I spent about 2 hours just going over the different mods and fixpacks and now finally am restarting the game, after having completely wiped out my old game and reinstalling everything. All in all I've spent about 4 hours wiping out, reinstalling, and testing each patch after installing.

The NPC patch is a must IMHO, and should be installed first or right after the EasyTutu fixpack.

Playing on the BG2 engine allows you to pick all the custom classes like Kensai and Monk, which is quite fun - as mentioned above right now my main is a Kensai / Wizard dual class. Using Stoneskin, Black Blade of Disaster and Tenser's Transformation makes the Kensai / Wizard a complete monster in combat, especially after using Kai - you can dual wield and slice things to ribbons.

Kensai / Thief is another awesome combo, because of the "use any item" high level ability at lvl 24. Carsomyr *5, Human Flesh *5, the Amulet of Seldarine and the Ring of Gaxx give 90% magic resistance added up using this ability.

Another cool combo is Wizard Slayer / Thief dual class. Again with the "use any item" ability, you can now wear all that magic stuff that you couldn't wear before as a Wizard Slayer. Another combo is using a Barbarian / Thief dual class - Jan Jansen's armour gives 25% physical resistance. This can be combined with the Defender of Easthaven *2 to give 45% resistance to physical attacks. A Barbarian gets physical resistance from level 11 which adds to this.

All in all, so many options are open to play around with, plus the ability to import the characters into BG2 makes the replayability of this game go through the roof.

Very interesting. I own them all but haven't played other than BG1, primarily becuase most are so graphically old now. Will have to try this sometime soon.

This thread deserves a bump to the top.

Edit - The Widescreen mod is still broken in Torment though. :(

Since I quit playing WoW I have been playing all of these older RPG games but I hated the 640x480 resolution.

BG1/2, Icewind Dale, & Planescape were awesome games IMO.

How is it broken. It works just fine for me. I'm playing PS:T at 1280x768 right now.

If anyone has an Intel GMA650 system (preferably, a netbook), can they see if the high-res mod of PS:T will work? I'm getting an MSI Wind in a few days and I'm wondering if I have any options for my month-long winter break... or thanksgiving break, for that matter.

Torment was hardly a graphically intensive game, but what is a GMA 650? You mean 950?

Either way, I would think Torment would run fine, provided the Wind is faster than a 23Mhz Pentium and has more than 128MB of RAM.

As far as the WS mod goes, I've never gotten it to successfully work. :(

I have so many bg2 mods installed it's not even funny. Banter packs are awesome, as are the tactics and turnabout mods. Ahhh... Still never player planescape or the IWD games... Crap - I have bg1 and 2 for mac and pc actually.
Yeah. I played BG2 originally on a Mac OS 8.6 machine - put that in your pipe and smoke it! (And this was back when I was like 12-14 or so and mac ports were HELLA expensive. 50 plus as I recall.)

More than worth it.
