Forty-five states require buyers to pay sales taxes on Internet and other out-of-state purchases, though a few, including California and Minnesota, exempt the first few hundred dollars and focus on high-ticket items.

I'm excused :)

Well I spent a lot more than a few hundred this year online, but I doubt they are going to do anything.

They can subpoena your financial records in an audit, so yes, they can find out. Of course, there's no Federal sales tax, so it's a state issue, which changes the rules a bit.
