Partlly right.

From what I understand the US printed billions of dollars worth Soviet currency and flooded the market with fake money. Old trick used to great effect.

Makes you wonder why they don't use it more often. I suppose it would be too easy and there's great risk that people would catch on to who was doing it. Especially if the agents got cought. That would be bad.

Apparently they had some close calls like that when they did that to the Soviets.
 
The U.S. also used cyber-warfare to great effect which turned out to be good parctice for future U.S. elections.
