July 4 is a paid holiday, but since most government offices are already closed on that day they move the holiday up to Friday so everyone still gets their paid day off.
Ding-ding-ding! Correct!!
Usually, if the holiday falls on a Saturday, they'll do the federal holiday on Friday. Holiday falls on a Sunday, federal holiday the following Monday. Certain holidays fall on specific dates (New Year's Day, Independence Day, Veteran's Day & Christmas), and can fall on any day of the week. Most, for reasons of simplification (I'm sure) have been mandated to a specific Monday (Memorial Day is last Monday in May, Labor Day is first Monday in September, etc), with pretty much the exception being Thanksgiving, which is always on a Thursday (believe it's the 3rd Thursday of November, if memory serves).
This year, Veteran's Day will fall on a Wednesday (federal holiday in the middle of the week), and Christmas will fall on a Friday (yes, ANOTHER Friday holiday!! ), as well as the New Year's Day 2010 holiday the following Friday. Almost seems like a trend now, doesn't it?? 😉
