It's the unforgettable sight of Maurice Cheeks leaving his team's bench in Portland to put his arm around 13-year-old Natalie Gilbert as she stood at mid-court holding a microphone but having fumbled the words to our national anthem, all alone and visibly in despair. For 20 years, Marvin Gaye's version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" has been, for my money, the most compelling rendition ever. But now, I've got a new favorite, the duet of Gilbert & Cheeks, impromptu, off-key, slapped together as it was. I get goose bumps every time I see the clip of Cheeks hugging Gilbert, telling her everything is going to be okay.

I didn't see it but I heard about it all day today. Too bad his class can't rub off on the rest of the Jail Blazers. In fairness one of them probably would have done it if they weren't all stoned. God I hate that team. And I'm in Oregon.
 
I saw it. It actually made me happy to see someone go out of their way to help that girl.
The look on her face when she forgot the words said so much, and I would hate be in her position.
It took a lot of guts for Cheeks to go out there and help her, he showed a lot of class.
 
She's actually a relative of mine (by marriage). I felt bad for her at first, but now she's getting national media coverage. Maybe she's actually very shrewd. 😉 😛
 
Yeah, it was cool.. and I'm amazed this local story is getting national attention.

It must really strike a chord with people.
