did THG make a mistake in their FX review?

socket 940? i thought it was 754? 😕

**edit**
i thought they were talking about the A64 line...my bad😉

although they did basically admit defeat in their review of the new FX...

pffft I think that they meant that FX's will move to 939 pin other wise they are dumb

940 is going no where. Also 754 isn't going anywhere the entire year either.

boom.

got read from the left to right.

shows how much THG knows about AMD....

No mistake... Tom is right.. The FX line is going from 940 to 939 (Opterons will stay 940). The 754 line will have a few more releases but is a dead end. The FX and 754 procs will converge into on 939 socket. Wait to buy a motherboard / proc (AMD) until the 939 board come out.

From X-Bit Labs:

"In addition to what has just been said, I would only like to remind you that Athlon 64 FX-53 is the last desktop processor from AMD for Socket 940 form-factor. In May the entire Athlon 64 FX family will move to Socket 939 and will acquire faster HyperTransport bus with 1GHz frequency and a dual-channel memory controller, which will not demand registered memory modules. So Socket 940 will only be used by Opteron processor family intended for servers and workstations."

I could make better reviews in my sleep...

And how was THG's review of the FX-53 worse than anands?

He meant that in most of THG's reviews are ussualy biased, toward Intel or who ever else is paying for ads that week but mostly Intel.

I remember reading THG ever since 2001.

He always recommended Athlon XP processors over equivalent P4s until P4 C came out
He recommended ATI cards over Nvidia cards ever since 9700 and Nvidia over ATI since geforce 4200 era
He did excellent review on sound cards like Augidy 2 and M-Audio Revolution - Audigy 2 for games, M for music
He recommends Raptor as the best SATA and Hitchachi 7k250 as the best large HD
etc. etc. etc.

The only flop he has ever done is the recommendation of Geforce 5800Ultra which was premature and he corrected himself later in the review where he said 5900 is better but ATI is still dominant for quality and performance
And when he says to wait for socket 939 that is the smartest thing to do no matter what anyone thinks unless you are loaded and buy new hardware every 6 months.
Yes he did underestimate A64 3000-3400+ performance by having too many tests where intel would always win, but then again you can read other reviews for comparison purposes.

REMEMBER, everything you read in life is for you to absorb and how you dissolve that information and interpret it is different from everyone else. For the most part, THG has been an excellent source of reviews and information and 95% of the time the recommendations and results are hand in hand with Anandtech and other websites.

since socket 939 is supposedly going to make the 3x00+ class faster, will they also make the fx class faster too?

A small bit since you don't need registered ram modules for the 939 platform. I guess for the FX line it means cheaper or higher speed modules, but at the moment the A64/FX line doesn't seem to be overclockers delight.

Finally no more registered DDR ram requirement (expensive and hard to find some that will overclock). They should have left it out with the A64's during launch. BTW will all the new boards come with pci-x? (and hopefully a pci/agp lock w/multiplier adjustments).

I thought Opterons would stay 940

AMD would replace the 754 with 939

And eventually 754 "XP" ( 256 cache )

edit: Looks like AMD is right on sch and that the FX will continue on with 939s

Yeah the FX is going to move to 939... not until May. The 53 is the last FX proc on the roadmap for the socket 940. Both platforme 64 & FX (not XP) will move to the 939 pin sockets at the end of April / begining of May.

Anand's review (maybe due to time) didn't show the overclockability of the fx-53??? I was happy to see THG did... Overclocked the proc just killed the competetion!😀

It will get rid of the necessity for registered Ram (slower) that the Opterons require in the 940 socket. The 939 should also incorporate a faster hyper transport. I don't know how much faster this will make the setup but it will be faster?😉
