Did the word holiday come from "holy day"?

If this is true, then everyone who says "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" due to religious disbeliefs/whatever reasoning, is now officially pwned.

um.. not really, well.. depends on the reason it is said. Technically, Hanukkah is Holy as well. 😛
Kwanzaa isn't really a holiday in any sense of the word (well, series of days that is considered a holiday), because its more of a way to remember heritage, and not celebrate something religious.

As an atheist, I enjoy the holidays for reasons other than celebrating the birth of some dude. Gift giving is cool and all, and receiving gifts is awesome.. however, now that I am older, it's also become a time where the entire family is together, and I really enjoy that now.

I use it so I don't have to say it twice (Christmas and New Year).

The real reason for the season. Hell if it was up to those pain in the ass Protestants we wouldn't be celebrating Christmas/Winter Solstice/Saturnalia at all.

indeed, because holy can only refer to christianity and new year's eve is a religious holiday as well, marking the day when Jesus and his disciples made a road trip out to Egypt for a rockin' kegger with some prostitutes.

1hol?i?day \"ha-le-'da, Brit usu "ha-le-de\ noun [ME, fr. OE haligdaeg, fr. halig holy + daeg day] (bef. 12c)
1 : holy day
2 : a day on which one is exempt from work; specif : a day marked by a general suspension of work in commemoration of an event
3 chiefly Brit : a period of relaxation : vacation ? often used in the phrase on holiday ? often used in pl.

I say "Happy Holidays" because there is more going on this time of year than Christmas. I celebrate the Winter Soltice this time of year.

F-ing religion has intertwined itself into our very language. I wouldn't be suprised if this were true.

Even the very days of the week come from religion!

seriously.

Thor and Woden can suck it.

Thursday is the gayest day of the week... is it just coincidence that Times Style comes out on the same day of the week that's associated with a burly, leather-clad god wielding a giant "hammer"? 😛
