I havnt had any problems with my 52X but its annoying just hereing it fire up. I called over a week ago and thier suppose to be sending me the upgrade for $32.00 but I havnt been billed or seen the drive. I'm going to call them and see whats up. They took down my Visa # and I got a RMA #, the way i took it they are suppose to ship me the drive. Then I send mine back. If I dont they will bill me for the full price.

SD did you ever recieve your 72X drive? I had to keep calling them. Some how they forgot to ship the drive out. The guy at Kenwood was very nice by apoligizeing about it and said there was NO excuse for it so he sent it next day air! I just got it today. Fast and Quiet!

The true 72x is a true lie.

Somewhere around 64-66x the CD starts to disintegrate, and all that will be left is plastic dust.

It might be BUT you cant beat upgrading for only $32.00 shipped. You cant even buy a cheap CD-Rom for that price! My 52X made a annoying sound when booting up my PC and atleast I wont have to hear that anymore! But I have heard bad thins about Kenwwood drives. But its hard to pass up a new 72X for only $32.00 shipped :)

I have a 52x with all the same problems. I've had a difficult time getting a hold of the proper people at Kenwood. They keep promising me a return call, but I've yet to get one.

PCResources, the disc is not spinning at 72x speeds. It actually spins about half as fast as a 50x drive. They use a multiple beam laser to get 72x equivilent speeds.
Check out this link for more info.

I would run some Sandra Soft Bencharks but I get an error trying to install it on my Win_2000 :|

Wingznut PEZ I know what your going threw. They do call back but it takes 2 days. So make sure you give them a phone number were you are at the most! BTW.. Since I had so much trouble the guys at Kenwood gave me hes direct phone line number and told me to call if it didnt show up the next day. But of course it showed up. If you need the number I can get it from work were I wrote it down and shoot you an e-mail with it Monday when I return. It might be faster or actually get a real live person :) I think I still have the number on my desk at work.

The Kenwood 72x True-X drive is very fast and quiet, but with my experiences using the drive, I only have one complaint. It has very erratic DAE. Something like 500 errors per track! Plus, the highly-praised DAE consistently averaged about 10x while my Teac CD-R56S CD-R (SCSI-2) does the same thing at 15x with NO errors. Anyone else have this problem?

Most of the CD-RW discs I put in mt 72x do NOT get read. I put them in my burner instead - that reads them ok. There has only been a couple of CD-R's that the Kenwood will not read, like maybe 2... No big deal.

You say:

What do you mean by this. I dont understand what you mean here?
Is there a way I can test mine to see if it does the same as yours?

I did get it in a timely fashion. Popped it in, seemed to run fine, but noticed that the DMA option was not even present. Upgraded the AMD bus mastering IDE controller drivers to the latest(1.32) and upgraded the 72x firmware. Then the DMA function was there but when enabled and re-booted, it would be disabled after the re-boot. I'm like "WTF." So, I say the hell with DMA. Then I noticed that when I use the 72x it hard locks my system requiring a reset switch re-boot:| Then the fun begins, Kenwood Tech Support:|:| I leave several messages before I finally get some idiot that tells me to go back to the old firmware. Didn't help, and of course I had to call him back so he could take other calls while I tried this. Once again, I leave several messages without a call back!!!:| Finally I emailed the RMA person that I was dealing with in the beginning, and that person got right back to me and they sent me a new drive.

Moral of the story, use RMA dept. for tech support, and don't bother with the firmware upgrade;)

Buckmaster, that would be awesome! I'd really appreciate that. I have CallerID, so I know for sure that they've never attempted to phone me.

Blayze, give them a call and tell them you are having problems with the unit not reading cd's. I don't have the number on hand, but just do a search for "52x" and it's on a previous thread.

Mday, you are lucky, and very much in the minority.

Man SD not much luck, sorry to hear the news. Heres a post of someone in the Operating System Fourms having troubles after he Flashed his drive also.

72X

Blayze, yes you can call Kenwood and upgrade your drive also. You might want to do a search here on Andtech on Kenwood drives. You might have to look back aways. But they recalled some of the old 40X drives and you can get a 72X for free! If its on the list. If not its only 32.00 to upgrade.

Wingznut PEZ if you can PM me Monday anytime so when I log on to Anandtech Fourms Ill will remember to get the number before I leave work.

Be sure to have your serial number (off the back of the drive) handy. They'll want that number.

Wingznut PEZ,

When I called Kenwood I didnt have my serial number written down at the time. I called thim from work. He did ask for it and I told him I didnt have it with me :( Then he said NP, but if we dont recieve your old 52X you will be charged full price on the 72X. The last thing I wanted to do was to hang up and have to contact them again with my serial number. So i didnt really have to give them mine. Maybe that was the long hold up? Anyways Im still looking for that number for you. I cant find it though!! :( I'll keep looking! Its not like me to throw something like that way. :)

What number did you call for the upgrade?

I have a 52X TrueX and have had some problems with it (already replaced once by Kenwood).

I've heard the 72X works better.

Thanks!
