Well, to be fair, the military did muck up the Tora Bora attack which allowed Bin Laden to escape.
False; not accurate or fair at all.
OBL was cornered and convinced he was going to die, he made his will after all. At one point he blabbed too long on his radio and we had him triangulated to within
10 meters. But then the Cheney Whitehouse told our people to hold off. We were ready to kill him or force him to take avenues of escape that we monitored or had covered with mines. Phantom goat herders that were still hanging out in an active war zone, up in the Afghan mountains, were suddenly a friendly fire liability we couldn't afford.
This was during the run up to invade Iraq again though, and Cheney/Rumsfeld were not about to let America's boogeyman get taken care of too quickly.
Our guys did exactly what they were ordered to, don't blame them, blame the chickenhawks trying to separate Saddam from controlling large oil reserves. People like Gary Berntsen had been warning the Pentagon about Tora Bora for weeks prior. Jim Mattis, current Sec. of Def, and John Mulholland of Special Forces fame also tried in vane to get D.C to listen to them about OBL escaping via Tora Bora but were told, thanks, if we need anything else we'll call you. 10th Mountain, thousands of Marines, we had all kinds of people wanting to bring that hunt to an end but ended up trying to finish it with 40 Army operators responsible for a 6 mile x 6 mile grid.
Was, and still is, completely ridiculous and a permant stain of shame for Cheney and his ilk. These are the people that helped birth ISIS no less, made worse because the social authoritarians at the time didn't like having gay terps on the payroll (which was the majority of them). To have
any republican bitch and moan about OBL not getting snuffed quickly enough is beyond fucking priceless. Almost expected from Team Treason at this point though.
