The full-scale plane took off.
And some people still say that the plane won't take off.

Was it done outside? Was it windy? Was it a STOL (short take off and landing) aircraft like the Helio Courier? I need to watch the episode.

Then they need to try it with something like a 190,000 pound Boeing 727.

I agree. It was such a paradox, that the earth actually moved away the plane just to not get involved in the ensuing discussion with folks that would have committed Dawinicide in earlier times (but the nanny-state saves them now.)Originally posted by: fisher

I feel like I'm missing something. Did the mythbusters build some sort of massive conveyor belt for airplanes? How would an airplane take off if it couldn't move forward?
Originally posted by: v1001
This is not right. If the conveyor belt matched the full sized version perfectly the plane would NOT move forward. You would look at it and it would stay right next to the same cone the whole time if looking from a side angle. The plane was going faster than the conveyor belt so it was able to move forward as if it was doing a normal take off and getting air to move over the wings. The whole entire argument was they would be perfectly matched the entire time. Which they did not. Damn it man I was thinking they would do this accurate and we'd have a real answer.

I missed the show. But I found this this. In case you want to see it.
That video was pretty lame. That truck was going like 20 in the opposite direction.

They used a huge cloth that was dragged by a car going the planes takeoff speed in the opposite direction. Refer to the other (much longer) thread for full explanations.

Why is it lame? The plane take off speed is aprox 20 MPH.
You're lame and in denial.
I say again, YOU'RE LAME.
Did I mentionned that you're lame?
LAME.
