DID telephone numbers

The company I work for has them and I like the convenience they give. My father has a business that I would like to get them for, but I'm not sure how it works. He has a Comdial Impact telephone system installed. Old, yes, so I don't know if it will handle DID. But does the hardware on my side matter? Is this something my telco (Bellsouth) does on their end and it just happens or does my hardware have to be programmed in some way? Any FAQ about DID numbers would be appreciated. I searched Google and only found things on other phone systems.

It's how the line is setup (provisioned) if it is to be a DID line. From there you tell the phone system what to do with it.

So Bell South definately has to do something.

What do you want to know? DID just means Direct Inward Dial. Basically, the telco gives you a block of numbers and then sets up DID trunks for these numbers to be carried on. If your Comdial supports DID trunk interface cards, then it will work. You can also do the same thing with Centrex, T1 PRIs, and ISDN. What type of service does your father have currently?

It might be best to hire a telecom consultant to do the phone system programming if you are not knowledgeable on the hardware.

what model phone system? dxp and dxp plus and newer will handle DID. The telco provides a loop and DI D numbers for you.
I even have some dxp DID cards on hand🙂

They said he had a Centrex account.

LMK if you have any more comdial specific questions. I have installed a few and my telephone guru friend has been doing comdial since the 80's.

Depending on the price of centrex lines from your telco, you can order Centrex lines with separate phone numbers, and assign them to only ring on certain phones. This would give you what I think you want. It would also be the easiest from a configuration standpoint, but perhaps not the cheapest. Do you have any knowledge of the Comdial system in place?

That phone room is very well organized. Mine looks like a million twisted pairs exploded all over the wall 😀

Who programs the phone system? Do you have access to the PBX software, or does the phone company handle all of it?

I think he's out of luck for DID. That is a comdial J0816 or J1632 DSUII. They don't do DID. You can program Direct Inward Station Dialing (DISD).

"The DISD feature allows an external party to call an intercom station directly without assistance
by the attendant. The system must receive the DISD call on a line that you have programmed to
allow this feature. You can program any line to be a DISD line for both the normal mode of
operation and the night transfer (of ringing) mode of operation."
excerpt from page 233 of the installation manual
Looking at Pic 3, it appears you have a voicemail since something is connected to serial port 3.
If they are already using auto attendant, the DISD will not be of asistance since that functionality can be handled with routing boxes in the voicemail.
