Did Samsung ever fix the gps on Galaxy S ?

Tmobile is giving them away free with my corporate discount... Considering getting a couple on family plan for the kids...

Only thing is the GPS fiasco...

No.

Edit: It might have been fixed for Vibrant 4G. But definitely not for the original Vibrant.

Gps "works" however it doesn't lock on instantly and accuracy can sometimes go out the window.

I wouldn't use the word "works" in the same sentence as "galaxy gps"
Not my Vibrant anyway.
I used it extensively during a 28 hr road trip and the signal would jump everywhere.
Drove me nuts.

My vibrant GPS works fine for Navigation. For hiking or something where I want accuracy better than +/- 17 feet I use my handheld GPS.

Nope. They've mitigated it somewhat, but it still takes a year to lock and is only accurate down to about 30ft.

Totally unacceptable.

I nearly lost a client over this issue when I recommended the purchase of a batch of Galaxy S's that ended up being unusable due to this bug.

Samsung's apparent inability and/or unwillingness to either fix this problem or resolve the issue directly with consumers now stuck with these phones in 2-year contracts is totally unacceptable.

It's because of this issue that I no longer purchase or recommend Samsung phones.

Stock, my GPS would occaisionally lock up my phone when I used Google maps or navigation. This was fixed when I used the kids froyo upgrade, but it's still very inaccurate. My rooted nook color is usually more accurate using my vibrant's tethered data (I haven't set it up to share GPS).

The one really good thing about my vibrant, though, is that it's ridiculously rugged. It would have shattered its screen a couple of times with the way I drop it, if it were a HTC or apple phone

the problem is that even with a fixed SGS the GPS is still weak. You can call it instant lock or whatever because I've never had a problem driving down the streets with Google Maps, but my other handsets consistently lock with better accuracy.

When you turn off a-GPS, that is the real test. How fast do your handsets lock without cell tower help? The SGS is consistently shitty in that department.

Half the time people complain because their phones aren't even setup right. The supl servers go down a LOT, meaning you rely on only GPS a lot. If you setup backup servers, this helps to remedy the problem.

You can tell by going to Maps. you should get an instant location even if it's within a 1 mile radius using cell towers. If not, the supl servers are not working. As a result, you're going to rely on gps which can take an awfully long time if you're indoors.

If you're willing to flash a ROM, you shouldn't really have to worry about GPS issues. Just realize the SGS is weaker in reception and GPS signal. If anything bothers me, the shitty reception is a bigger issue than the GPS.

Anyone confirm if the GPS on a VZW Fascinate works good or not? Sorry to bump a semi-old thread.

Its flakey. My understanding is that its better than the Vibrant/Captivates, but still worse than the Motorolas and HTCs. Also, it seems to be hit or miss, some Fascinates work 'well', some don't work at all.

Better question is, why are you considering a Fascinate at this stage? There's better options.

Found one for $100, which is way cheaper than they normally sell for. Looking for a phone for someone else, don't want to spend more than $100.

Works fine on mine. Did a road trip on Google nav recently. Getting a cold lock can take a bit (though the current ROM flavors are apparently really good), but it tracks perfectly.

It works on my Epic, but its still a little flaky. It loses lock in situations where it really shouldn't be having much trouble. I think they screwed up big time on the antenna and there is only so much they can do.
