So, we are supposed to believe that Luke Skywalker is...17-19 in the first Star Wars movie, right? Maybe younger? And he's essentially born the moment that Darth Vader becomes Darth Vader, when Obi Wan looked like this:

Riddle me this: how, after 17 or so years, does Obi Wan come to look like this:

Are we supposed to believe that it was the dry desert air, the stress from defending your hut from tusken raiders and shooing jawas off of your stoop?

:hmm:

He had a hard life. You would too if you had to live on a planet that served blue milk.

According to Wookieepedia, he was 57 in the original Star Wars. It's within the realm of possibility. I've known guys in their late 50s to look like that. Alec Guinness was 63 when the movie was shot.

I think the current info on wookieepedia was edited at the demand of George Lucas, sometime during the release of the 2nd horrible movie.

Everyone knows that Obi Wan was ~89 in the first Star Wars movie.

Put too much thought into this, you have.

actually, I was walking on the sidewalk yesterday when some crazy old man slowed down to honk and yell general curses in my direction. It was rather profound.

He reminded me of a senile obi wan, and his image haunted my dreams.

Patrick Stewart was 47 when he started Next Generation. He looked like he was 67.

You're basing something that happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away on a unit of time standardized by our planet and our solar system.

Sci-fi fail

Mid 40's is what Ewan McGregors char was suppose to be I think. Take 20 years of a hard life hiding out from the empire and by the time you reach mid 60's you could be looking a bit rough.

he no longer had a steady job to keep him young. you'd be surprised what happens to the body when it's not active.

Wouldn't all the traveling at relativistic speeds slow down aging?

You're missing one key variable: George Lucas.

This. Remember, this is the same story in which Leia has real memories of her mother in Return of the Jedi but that same mother dies during childbirth during Sith. It's also the story in which Kenobi's greatest student builds a droid that is friends with another droid, Obi Wan himself interacts with for extended periods of time with both of them, and just a nit later in the chronology he can't remember either one. It's the story in which Yoda was Obi Wan's teacher in Empire and QuiGonn was in Phantom. It's the story in which QuiGonn "discovers" how to become a jedi ghost in Sith and Vader, who never had the opportunity to learn that trick, performs it in Jedi. Lucas is a master a revisionist history.

The prequels tried too hard to explain stuff that really didn't need explaining.
