Did my professor give me a (in)correct final grade?

I am taking a History class online and I checked my final grade which shows a D. The grading for the class breakes down like this:

3 Tests - which consist of 45% of the Final Grade.
Discussion Posts - which consist of 35% of the Final Grade.
Term Paper - which consists of 20% of the Final Grade.

On the 3 Tests I received a 72,80,72
On the Discussion posts I received a grade of a B

I still dont know what my grade is for the Term paper, since the professor will be mailing it to me, with a grade and comments.

I averaged out the tests which gives me a 74.6 and a discussion grade of a "B" which totals to 80% of the final grade.

Is it possible to still receive a "D" on the final grade?

Yep, you can still get a D.

Your three grades average to about 74.67% of 45% which is 33.6% of the final grade.
Your posts give you a B which I assume is 85% of 35% which is 29.75% of the final grade.

That adds up to 63.35%. If you failed your final paper, then you could have gotten a D.

Basically yes. Assuming he counts an A on the discussion posts as a 35/35, a B would be a < 90% or < 31.5. You received 33.57 points out of a possible 40 for your tests.

So you're at 65.07/80. If you get less then a 5 out of 20 on your term paper, you get a D.

What I would do is make sure the professor received your final paper. It is possible he overlooked it and gave you a 0 out of 20. This happened in my Women in World Lit course where the professor changed the place to hand in the paper in a class I did not attend. Wound up getting a D as my final grade because she gave me a 0 out of 25, received a B once she found and graded it.

I think all these pecentage of grades are horse sh!t.
I took this geog 100 class, got a 3.4 average on term paper which is 60% of our grades.
Then the TA gave me a 1.3 on my 40% essay exam.

What's the point of doing in percentage when the grading scales are off the wall.
The final exam ended up to be 90% of my total grade.

i didn't follow any of that. Wtf is a 3.4 average, and a 1.3?

yea, email your professor. mine forgot to add my final paper and had me at a C+. he fixed it to an A

Honestly, did you just totally half-ass your final exam? Even putting in random B.S. will usually get you a 50%. It sounds like your professor just didn't receive your final and thus gave you a 0.

Ok, i calm down a bit now.
Our school likes to uses the 4.0 GPA scale for grading anything.
I was getting an average of 3.4(high B?) for the term paper (60% of total grade), where the mean for the class is around 3.0.
Then the final exam I got a 1.3 (something below F I guess), the mean was about 2.3 according to the TA.
The weighted average becomes useless.

Just call up your professor. That will sort it out in a matter of minutes. Professors can make mistakes too. I actually had to call one of my professors this past semester because she entered a grade in that was wrong. Not a big deal, just make the phone call 🙂

Sorry to hear that. I had a similar experience, but it went the other direction. I had an advanced Java class, and really I suck at Java. I am sure I failed the final (heck, I didn't even attempt half of the questions) and the final counted as 30% of my grade. Guess what, I got an A in the class. I think I need to send that teacher some money for Christmas. My calculations showed that I could realistically get nothing higher than a C with that crappy job on the final. Oh well, another 4.0 semester.......
