A local place will do yours in the store, or over a day or two if they're really complicated, and will file them electronically for you as well. They charge $75 per person per return, up to 4 W4 slips (after that they charge more). They may charge extra for special situations, but for most people it'll be $75.

It's just not as night and day. If you make a simple base salary and that's it, you can plan it pretty well.

But if you work overtime, a second job, receive bonuses, or have some really weird deductions it's difficult to plan ahead on that stuff.

We'll be getting back around $5,000 this year.

But that's largely because my wife received a $20,000 sign on bonus of which she paid about $9,000 in taxes on. We'll get a big chunk of that back.

Plus we had some moving expenses that reduced our taxible income. It just isn't something that you can plan on at the beginning of the year.

Everyone works differently. For many people it's just easier to get a lump $1500 back that they can use to pay down a credit card or put back into their home. If they got an extra $110 a month they would just blow that on stupid stuff like going out to eat or little nick nack crap.

oh and the 100% satisfaction is if they screw up. not because you dislike how much they charged.

if she didn't like that they didn't give her a answere on how much it cost before then she shouldnt have stayed. the only person to blame is your GF.

It's "Satisfaction guaranteed", i'm not satisfied, and neither is she after she found out that out of the 5 people that we know that filed their taxes already, they all had theirs done 1-2day loan return and getting back $2000-$7500, that their costs ranged from $60-$140.
1st off, tell your gf to stop being lazy and do her own taxes. The software and websites out there make it a breeze to do and only cost between $10-$50. The reason she got charged so much is because that's the rate they charge. The places in Walmart and that advertise on the street corner are the ones that know that the people that will use them are greedy and only care about getting the return as fast as possible.

Wow, now I don't feel so bad paying $30 for my Federal + State Income tax filing plus direct deposit.

EDIT: I used TaxAct by the way.

therefore, OP's gf = pwned

If all she did was sell some stock, it's not freakin' rocket surgery. Oh, and I wouldn't trust walmart to ring up my laundry soap without screwing it up so why on God's green earth would anyone trust them with their TAXES!?!?!?

well they are not assiociated with walmart. they just rent some floor space from them (unless its something new anyway).

the local walmarts here have H&R block in them.

8K back? Your friend needs to increase his withholdings because he's loaning Uncle Sam too much money throughout the year he could be earning interest on.

edit: yeah, I just read the rest of the thread.

Either way, your return's going to smell like week-old corn dogs.

They have "Jackson Hewitt" here in my area.

For these tax prep places it's a match made in Heaven

Walmarts avg customer (Jo Bob Sixpack) + $60 1040A = $$$$$$$$$$
