;) Looks like he's in for a wait :)

6600 series cards are scheduled to be launched in quantity in september. or so they say... could be another paper launch *cough* x800xt, 6800 ultra *cough*

I don't put too much faith in release dates.

Granted it doesn't have the AGP, PCI Express will and can be an alternative..

Spec something similar out on newegg.. With a decent 17" LCD

Add tax

and Shipping..

Not TOOOOO bad.. That was all I am saying..

That's not really a bad deal considering the 17" LCD which alone goes for like $400. Dell has to make some money too. The fact is, you guys build your own and support your own, and are cheap asses to boot :p

The LCD is pretty descent and can be bought seperately for about $400(+50 max). 1350-400=950 for CPU plus extras is definetly a high price. There seems to be no doubt that he was ripped off on this deal. He could have got a NB with slightly less specs at this price range given the obvious advantages.
Wish him to be more thoughtful on his purchases in the future :)

Let him enjoy his new computer. But next time, convince him to "roll your own!" I built my first rig a couple months ago and it is running great. I thought I was over my head when I looked at all the wires in the case I bought (Thermaltake Xaser V) but it was pretty straight forward. When I saw it POST the first time out, I was ecstatic! I will NEVER buy off the rack again.

BTW, what I invested in my rig I figured would have cost me hundreds more if I had one of the major brands build it to the specs I have it at now.

X300 isn't the best.. But he could pawn that off and get a 9800 pro or 6800 series card..
the Dell doesn't have AGP as far as I know. Buying one of those would be his second mistake :)
But it does have PCI-E.

Which SEVERELY limits the possibility for upgrading.

True... but if 50 is anything like me, he can't stand to see people overpay by such a large amount. It just seems so stupid to me to pay $1350 for something that can be built for under $1000. It angers me when someone in my family or someone close to me overpays either because they don't know any better and don't ask me or because they have more money than sense. Then again, if this person isn't very computer literate, you can say that extra $350 is for tech support phone calls and no hassle warranty service.

Something is screwy with your specs.

#1 Dell doesn't sell the 3.06 GHz P4 anymore in their home computers.
#2 Dell never sold the 3.06 GHz P4 with DDR2.
#3 You never mentioned the warranty. Is that 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, or 4 years? That could easilly add several hundred to the price that people aren't including when they say they could build it for less.
#4 You never mentioned if that included shipping.
#5 Is that Win XP home or pro?

That said, a computer with those specs can be found cheaper, but not THAT much cheaper. If you just do some rough math: $200 CPU, $200 for case/MB/powersupply/odds and ends, $50 for HD, $450 for the monitor, $150 for memory, $50 for the OS, $50 for the printer, $50 for a cheap video card you get a total of $1200. Not that bad of a price. Yes my numbers are quite rough (rounded to nearest $50 to keep things simple), but they aren't that far off from reality.

Eh, he kinda did, but the LCD and the gig of memory are nice, I'm assuming he got the Dimension 8400? I really wouldn't worry about it. I'm glad I spent the money I did on my last Dell, because i'm still using stuff from it. Besides, they are nice computers, I don't care what "gamers" say, Dell makes a nice all around comp, period.

^ Shipping on my 19" monitor from Newegg was about $30

Those touting Dell's tech support should note that I just recently had to de-spyware-ize a family friend's Dell and fix up a few other things because tech support basically told them to f*ck off.

I think you missed the 19 foot CRT monitor comment. Yes a 19 inch CRT isn't that expensive to ship. That said, AMDHardcorefan forgot an operating system, case, printer, speakers, mouse, difference in LCD vs CRT costs, and keyboard in the quote. But what else would you expect from someone with a 19 foot monitor. :)

Dell's tech support is slipping. It is slipping fast. Just look at recent customer satisfaction surveys. Dell used to be #1 by far of all PC makers (not counting Apple as it is in a class of its own). That is no longer true. Dell lost its big lead, and is now losing its #1 position. If things continue, Dell will fall to the middle of the pack and maybe lower.

This is a rip off but lets look on the good side. Your still getting a nice lcd monitor with all that and you have next generation parts. ddr2, pci-express, all those things allow room for future expansion and upgrade. Wait until ddr2 becomes cheap and those pci-express video cards to come out and then upgrade. You'll be ahead of the curve. The x300 isn't going to get you anywhre.

You know if people used mozilla firefox, and ad-aware instead of IE their computers would last forever, instead of "dieing"
