My friend just bought a dell, he spent 1350 and got

P4 3.06
1 gb DDR2
Radeon 300x (never heard of it)
dell speakers
1701fp
dell keyboard and mouse
win xp

I think he got ripped off, he said he didn't want to build it himself because it didn't have an OS.

The 300x AFAIK is the new lower end series from ATI. From what I have seen, there is a x300, a x600, and the x800. I saw the x600 on an inventory sheet at my store, but haven't seen much about it anywhere else....

That's not TOO terribly bad considering the LCD included...

X300 isn't the best.. But he could pawn that off and get a 9800 pro or 6800 series card..

Your friend made a big mistake if he cares about gaming. It's a decent machine for PhotoShop though.

the Dell doesn't have AGP as far as I know. Buying one of those would be his second mistake :)

Thats a silly reason not to build yourself. On the money you save you can actually own a copy of an OS. Instead of rellying on a P.O.S rescue disk.

Hopefully he doesn't plan on gaming, as he's not gonna find any good PCI-E cards for a while.

It's an ok deal if he doesn't want to game.

Expect to be paying out the rear for a new PCI-E videocard if he does...

Seems like a nice system to me. Is he happy with it? New computers are exciting, let him enjoy it! :)

I second that... While I personally wouldn't buy it, If he's happy with it, then let it be. Also, he does get a warranty(sp?) and call support from DELL. That means that none of us will have to go over to his house and hold his hand when something goes wrong. ;)

hmmm ....
I would say he made a bad purchase.

DDR2 is a waste right now since DDR1 is still faster. (From what I've seen at least in reviews)

I could put together a Athlon64 3200+ system with a 17inch LCD and a MUCH better vidcard for less. One that would stomp the dell in every possible benchmark.

As far as intel based PCs ... I think he paid about $200 to $300 too much ...
