I recently moved and somehow lost the legs to one of my desks in the move. it's a simple desk for an all in one computer (imac) so is really just a piece of wood and a set of legs. I originally bought the legs for $20 for the set, but now the price seems to be $15 per leg ($60 total).

Looking through ikea for a cheapie desk is even more interesting - prices seem to be up across the board and walmart seems to be a better choice for cheap, disposable furniture.

Anyone else notice this, or is it a local phenomena?

Ikea was never super cheap. At least not as long as I can remember. it's been competitive though

For the money it's usually better constructed/designed than most of the stuff that comes from walmart or target.

Ikea's the best cheap furniture. The stuff's very well made for the money you spend. WalMart stuff's disposable. Ikea is a little utilitarian, but will last forever.

i've found that the cheapest ikea stuff doesn't hold up too well to repeated assembly/disassembly.

and yes, the prices went up. they used to have a high-back office chair with armrests for 69.99. recently they changed the name, for the exact same chair, and made it 79.99

Yep - exactly what happened with the silly legs. They changed the name of the line and increased the price.

Yes. They've always had a few really cheap things as specials, to make you think their prices are really low.

Their real wood stuff is great, but their particle board furniture didn't last a single cross-country move despite being well-packed--nearly every single piece of particle board stuff I owned from them got completely trashed.

I blame that on the particle board nature of it more than it being Ikea furniture though.

I was thinking of the particle board stuff in particular when I said that. I don't have a huge amount of things from Ikea, but everything I have is very solid. They're actually the store that got me to accept chipboard furniture. I had sworn off the stuff for the longest time, but needed a cheap computer desk. I was very pleased with the sturdiness of the desk I got, and now will only buy chipboard from Ikea*

*Assuming I want such a thing. I still much prefer wood, but sometimes something less than the best will do for a particular purpose.

Yeah, the solid wood stuff is made well. The other stuff sucks.

We have a glass coffee table from ikea that is a piece of junk. It never fit together right and now wobbles uncontrollably if you brush against it. All the bolts in it are basically stripped so we can't tighten it up. Oh well, it'll make its way to the sidewalk with a "free" sign and we'll just buy a new one I guess.

I bought a cheap-o dining room table with 4 chairs back in 2005 for $99 and now it's $120 for the same exact thing.

I used to be a big fan and still do like a lot of their kitchen stuff like cups, pots, pans, etc.. but their furniture isn't any better or cheaper than what you can get at Wal-mart sadly.

You can get free replacement parts from them if you just go to the customer service area and ask.
