Did IBM sell off its CPU business too

no, its actually proubly one of thier more profitable divisions. between making the chips for 2 out of the 3 next game consoles, making chips for apple, and helping with R&D for many other companies

Motorola used to make some of the powerpc chips but they've stoped. I think thier last powerpc chip was the 603 or g3 series I forget which

the irony of ibm making cpu's for Apple and not for "IBM" pc's is so rich.

and yes, i'm aware how long this has been true.

No. They heavily invested in a new fabrication facility at Fishkill during the tech bust. The risk they took is paying off as they currenlty produce the G5 processors for Apple, IBM servers, and will be producing parts for the next generation of consoles by Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.

Falloutboy:
I'd say they actually have a potential to be making CPUs for all three, given the fact that Nintendo currently uses an IBM CPU and they're the only one not to have yet announced thier next processor.

It has already been anounced long ago that Nintendo will use IBM for the CPU and ATI for the GPU.

Okay, then make that a confirmed sweep. I'm beginning to wonder if there's actually going to be some console-cross compatibility modding next round.
