Hello,

Last night I tried to install a new hard drive into my computer. When I went to boot it up I received a constant tone post beep code. This happening before I thought I had knocked the fan out of fan header 1. So I made sureit was plugged into the header correctly and I restarted the computer. I still got the constant beep so I unplugged the new hard drive. When I went to restart the computer, the fans powered on and the power led, hdd led and cdrom led all came on and stayed on. I've inspected the processor and I didn't see any visible damage so the only thing I can think of is I somehow shorted the mobo. Any input would be appreciated.

system specs

Abit KT7A-RAID
AMD Athlon 1.2ghz oced to 1.46
SBLive
256megs Kingston pc133
Geforce2 gts
20gig wd

Make sure you put the motherboard/case standoffs only in the places where the motherboard has screwholes. Sometimes people put too many and that can short the board.

That depends on where the short is.
I have done it before, and had a working board afterwords. I suppose however, that you could short something that didn't like it at all.

If you are getting a post tone, your mobo is probably still alive. Have you looked up what warning tone you are getting? I think that's award bios on those boards, so if you are getting anything other than "beeeeeeeeeep beep-beep", it's probably a RAM thing.

Does it still beep when you boot it, or is the mobo silent now? If it's quiet now, try booting with no vid card. If you still get no beeps, your mobo may be dead.

Sounds bad....the board's not even posting, then. Prob shorted out something critical. I had the same problem recently. Luckily, I had just bought the stuff & was able to RMA it.

Perhaps a small, private ceremony in the backyard, next to the maple tree?

Yea I'm about to get out the shovel ;/ but hopefully the store I bought it from will overlook the small details of me losing the receipt and RMA it for me.
