Did I Screw Myself with a 939 3400+?

Okay you AMD64 gurus HELP!! I think my lack of knowledge just got me ripped. I picked up a 939 off of ebay and everywhere I go they just talk about the non-capatibility it has with most mobo?s. It is an ADA3400DEP4AZ 939 3400+ 2.2 GHz. The seller says it is a Newcastle but another site on google says it is a Hammer.

Anyone know this critter and if so, got any suggestions as to what I can put it in?

I heard that 939 3400's are teh sux0r. I have a 3400 754 hammer and for OCing it blows ass.

The 3400+ s939 is the exact same as the 3500+ with one difference. It runs on the 800(1600) htt bus instead of the 1000(2ghz) htt bus. You will not be able to tell any difference between the 2 cpu's in performance.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that 3400+ s939 cpu. It will perform almost exactly like the 3500+ cpu would.

You may have to flash your bios on your mobo before it'll work. But just like formulav8 stated, it's still a good CPU. 800 vs 1000 HTT doesn't mean much. I dropped my HTT to 4x (I have a 5x 3500+) and ran benchmarks. I did not have ANY performance loss. There's an article somewhere on this... link please?

You just have to use one lower HTT multi when overclocking.

With a 3500+

200mhz 5x FSB=1000/2000
250mhz 4x FSB=1000/2000
300mhz 3x FSB=900/1800

With a 3400+

200mhz 4x FSB=800/1600
250mhz 3x FSB=750/1500
300mhz 2x FSB=600/1200

But like others have posted the performance difference is very small

Well I finally got the beasty in and the first thing I noticed is (compared to socket a) "this sob is heavy!!" :Q

I have that same processor and it runs extremely quickly. I was a bit worried when I couldn't find any information about it and I did have to update the bios on my motherboard to work with it.

The main disadvantage is that it's a newcastle and not a winchester, and will not be as good for ocing. How much did you pay for it?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't HTT basically just an I/O bus now. For example... PCI cards, IDE controllers, SATA controllers, video cards, etc. etc. are connected to the processor through this bus. With the Pentium 4 and Athlon XP, memory bandwidth would also be included in that... but with the on die memory controller of the Athlon 64, they're two separate things. Currently it tops out at 16 GB/sec... do you think you'll have 16 GB/sec of I/O activity going on at any one time? I doubt you even have half that.

Oh no. You'll be mainly limited bo the RAM bandwidth. Maybe if you had like 64 PCIxpress lanes going somewhere, you could use 16g. And I have no idea who in the world told you that the 939 3400 is incompatible? Were you in the Intel forums?

Cheesetogo, it cost me $209.50 (One of those ?throw out a bid on ebay because someone will out bid you anyway? things); unfortunately it is ?used? and was guaranteed Non DOA, but that time ran out before I even had a board!

nice link! it's nice to know that @ 1800mhz, and when 7 x 257mhz == 9 x 200mhz, it has little performance in most applications, except games (3%-4%).

Don't think you mentioned the Motherboard selected - however, I recommended the XP-90 heatsink. It's an excellent cooler, fits well in almost all configurations, and can be run with a quiet 92mm fan.. oh, and it's light weigh is a plus.

SVC has been offering this heatsink with $10 "coupon" savings off and on for some time now. I purchased a retail version with fan for ~$35 and have been very happy with the setup. Typically running the fan at about 1250 rpm which is almost silent and keep temperatures on my overclocked 3200+ in the high 20s to low 30s under load.

I have the same processor. I love it. I called AMD about it today, and they said that it was OEM only. At any rate, I've got excellent performance after a BIOS update to my A8V. I would flash the BIOS right after you put the system together as I was getting uncommanded shutdowns of my system until the flash.

Apparently, I've got an atypical solution. It's a Gigabyte cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835128003

It's nice and quiet and has a manual RPM controller. My system apparently runs a little warm, but I don't have the RPM controller installed and the thing is silent.
