Did I pass up a good deal on a car(used)?

I bid $57 on this auction and my mom made me cancel it :(. It's a 1990 Toyota Tercel, not the best car in the world and not in the best condition, but at under $60 you can't really expect more. I estimate the actual value of the car to be able $150 to maybe $200. What's your opinion?

should have bought it just to run it into things. fences, walls, small creeks, etc.

Even tough I said your mom was right, you could have prolly sold it to Ecology or the local equivalent for at least that much. Course, that didn't occur to me until I had already voted:p

You should have bought it then donated it to charity as a tax write-off for like $500.

If it runs and can pass emission tests you could have gotten a minimum of $300 for it in any major city. If it can't pass emission tests you would have to sell it where those don't matter so it would have been cheaper but you could have EASILY doubled your money. For $70 I would have bought it, the only thing that would stop me purchasing it at that price would be blood and brains all over the interior of the car ala pulp fiction.

Wouldn't make a cross country trip, but just for going to the mall and back, I think it be decent. I found this to be an awesome deal because of the cheap price and that the guy selling it was actually close to me. No going down to Florida or Texas to get some car and have to drive a few hundred miles to get it here. I'm gonna print this out and yell at my mom some now :). Argg, an A/C cost more then $57, a pair of shoes cost more then $57, why is my mommy so mean?

57 bux? I'd buy it just so I could fill it with tanks of gasoline and set the car on fire. . .

wiredspider, I think it would be a good deal for someone who can fix it (or maintain it). But once you add in all of the registration/transfer fees, taxes and safety check (where applicable) and INSURANCE, it will be FAR more expensive. Perhaps that's why your Mom thought it ws not a good idea?

Jfur, the registration fees or transfer fees are a given with any car, so I doubt much was to that fact. Insurance is a b*tch for all new drivers... In fact I think my monthly payments for insurance would be between double or triple the price of this car. However, insurance is also a given on any car. I have no plans to keep this car for a long term period, if it made it until the end of this year(3 months), I would be happy(as long as I haven't spent any additional money on it for fixing things). The crankshaft repair(for parts and labor) would run me nearly $300, so it would be time for another junky car :). Also saw an ad in the paper for a minimum of a $3,000 trade in on any car, even if you have to push it on to the lot(probably some exclusional junk, but it seem straightforward.)

Speaking of driving into creeks, has one seen a video of an old lady driving into a river or some body of water and driving back out? My mom said she saw it and it was hilarious, believe in was in England or some place in Europe. Thanks

You could probably find another car in the classifieds that runs decently for a few hundred $$? :) Maybe your Mom is just being overprotective :Q
