Did I miss something? why did the Wii console triple in price?

I haven't bought a console since about 1995 I guess personally, and gave it away to a Single mom for her daughter my wife worked with shortly after.

Maybe just me I guess.

Have three rigs running though.

😛

Lol. I had to look that up to see if it was real. The average Amazon resellers price if about $140. I'm guessing that yes, indeed, they are taking advantage of people confusing the Wii and Wii U. Which doesn't exactly speak volumes for Nintendo either if it's such an easy scam.

I'm pretty sure people would be pissed when they find out that the Wii didn't come with the new pad controller. It's sad to see scams like that.

SEE?

I like your suggestion, they are capitalizing on people who dont know the difference between Wii and Wii U.

**REMOVED** it, I'll just get a Wii U. Which games does it NOT emulate?

No cursing

Do you want the Wii U specific games? If not, just get a Wii...

They aren't intending to scam Wii U shoppers. They are marking them up and ripping people off who want a original Wii new because you can't buy them new in the store anymore.

It doesn't emulate. It reboots in Wii mode and runs native Wii OS. Same architecture.

IIRC, it's full hardware backwards compatible. The CPU and GPU essentially being faster versions of what was in the Wii. It doesn't support disc based GameCube games, but it does downloadable ones. So I guess the disc drive in the Wii U doesn't support 80mm media.

The only downside aside from higher price, is you'll need to buy a Wiimote with Motion Plus separately. The Wii U doesn't come with them. Amazon (Canada anyway) has a sale on right now for Wii U games. Some of the third party ones are deeply discounted. Mass Effect 3 was going for $10 and ACIV was up for $20.

Why did Nintendo stop making the Wii? The NES was on the US market for 10 years, and this was their most popular console since then.

To push people into buying the Wii U. They discontinued the Wii right before Holiday 2013. They do, however, still sell the Wii Mini. Though who would want a console these days with no online capability is beyond me. I guess maybe if you want something cheap for the cottage or RV, it works.

I see GameStop is selling refurbs of the old 8GB Wii U for $200. Almost in "impulse buy" territory. I think you can hook an external drive up to it for more storage. Mind you, I've got enough gaming crap lying around. A new Zelda might change my mind. Still debating whether or not I want to sell my PS4. Games are getting too expensive for it, and I'd rather sink the cash into a new PC.

Eh, I have less than zero interest in an online console outside of maybe Virtual Console stuff. I had the trial of XBLG on the 360, but it felt like something that should have been free. I downloaded some demos on the PS3, but that's it. The only reason I play consoles is for the single player (or local multiplayer, which gets the shaft so often these days) stuff like TLOU, SM3DW.

I do multiplayer/online with PC. If I didn't do that, I might see more of the appeal of the online features of consoles. The U definitely seems much more likely to get a sale from me though compared to PS4/XB1. I got gifted a 360, and just didn't care for it. Have maybe 8 hours total playtime on it personally. I bought a PS3, and really liked most of the few games I've played on there, but they don't really scream 'replay'. If it weren't for Naughty Dog games, I would have never bought one. The sad thing about my 360 is that after easily less than a few weekends of play, it RROD'd. It was in a well ventilated spot in my rack, with ambient temps around it of 70 or less. Was the Elite 120GB. Beyond me trying it out, it just sat there, but when friends would come over with their kids, they would fire it up while the adults went shooting.

Then again, I have less than 30 minutes/week gaming time on average, with most weeks having zero these days. I'm going to try to up that to around an hour a week after my youngest turns two this fall, but for now as I'm working 80+ hours a week (working right now, typing in downtime, lol), what little spare blocks of time I get I spend with my family.

So in my context, 'online' capability for a console is about as important as a bicycle for a fish. I can't be arsed to go though logging in, joining online crap, yadda yadda. Just want to fire it up and play for 20-30 minutes and not be online at all. Even on my PC, I usually feel like I've wasted my time after playing something online vs. SP. 'Rank', 'Trophies', etc, what a farce. I want to see the next level, the next boss, the ending, and then see something else. Not the 'I picked 500 dandelions' award.

I hear ya, but I think you're in the minority these days.

Ah yes, all the things I collectively refer to as "online vs. mode gaming epeening".

K/D ratios, frags, gamer scores, achievements, trophies, ladder ranks, unlocks, limited time window exclusive content like pets, avatars, in game gear, etc, etc, etc, etc.

This is the majority of what online connectivity has brought to console gaming, and none of it is positive in my book.

I just want to enjoy a story, a challenge, and ending scenes. Games have really become too over burdened with all this social integration, public score keeping, and look what I have nonsense. There's no room for the game itself anymore.

I finally picked up my in-law's Wii this past weekend. Like I said earlier, it was just sitting in a storage container in their garage and had been there for over two years.

I think they got every accessory imaginable for this thing. They have the dance pad, two different steering wheels, the entire Rock Band instrument set, multiple zappers, the exercise balance board, a golf club, a fishing rod, a wireless sensor bar, an Energizer wiimote charging plate, etc, etc.

Half that crap I'll never use and I'm tempted to unload it via Craigslist. I just wanted to play Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Metroid Prime 3, and Skyward Sword.
