Did I mess up when installing my cooler?

The mobo manual says to install the CPU cooler by pushing diagonally. I pushed them in one by one instead of two at the same time. Does this really make a difference?

As long as it doesn't wigle around or fall off you're good.

Thanks. CoreTemp says cpu is 64 C under load, but when I touch the heatsink, its cool. Does the direction matter when you mount? I know this is a stupid question but I don't want to leave anything to chance.

The CPU is an E6600 and the heatsink is stock.

Nope direction doesn't matter, just make sure it's on good and tight... shouldn't be loose.

I would recommend scraping off those 3 stripes of thermal gunk off the factory heatsink and using some thermal compound instead. Even the $1.89 stuff from RadioShack beats the factory "thermal interface material" although if you can get some Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic MX-1 it would be even better.

Will adding thermal paste void the warranty? Will I have to use alcohol or something else to clean the CPU or heatsink before I add the paste? I've heard of silver 5, but what is MX-1? Thanks for the help.

Yeah just clean it up with some alcohol then apply the AS5 or similar stuff. With the stock cooler temps will go pretty high.

You need to use thermal paste!! If you don`t you quite possibly could have no CPU to worry about voiding the warrantie on...lol

Nope, using thermal paste won't void the warranty. Besides, if you ever have to send it back for replacement they will only want the chip back and not the heatsink so they won't be able to tell what you used for a heatsink. ;)

Are you telling me that AS5 really won't void the warranty or that they won't be able to tell? And on some forum (I think on this one) I read that the CPU warranty wasn't honored because the user did not send the heatsink back. Has anyone actually sent only their CPU back and gotten a replacement from Intel?

The only time I RMA'd a cpu to Intel all they wanted was the cpu, in fact, they specifically told me NOT to include the heatsink/fan. And the replacement they sent was a sealed boxed cpu with a heatsink/fan of the exact same model.

That is reassuring. As for the warranty, AMD voids it if you use AS5, so I'm not sure about Intel. Beachboy, when you said they don't kill the warrant, did you mean they don't void it because they don't know you used AS5 or that the use of AS5 has no impact on the warranty? Thanks for the help.

They never asked about the heatsink or thermal paste and I didn't offer any information. All the guy I talked to wanted to know was the problem and the S-code, then asked me which motherboard I tried it in... I named two brands and he issued the RMA which he said would go out as soon as they received the old cpu. I sent it and around a week later I had a new one. :)

It wasn't even a cpu I had bought. My brother sent me the burnt out cpu from his work and I noticed the S-code was retail. I tried it in a couple different boards and it was definitely messed up and so I called Intel figuring WTF I got nothing to lose. It was a Intel Pentium 4 1.9ghz 400mhz 256kb Socket 478 and now it's replacement sits in my backup machine in the basement working just fine.

Wow. Thanks a lot. What is an s code? Will the temps really improve if I use AS5 on a stock cooler. As for installation, should I take the mobo out of the case? Thanks again, Beachboy.

Actually it's called an S-Spec and here's a link to look them up. Intel S-Spec link

pic of my cpu, S-Spec is SL9S9 it should also be on the box you bought. ;)

And yes, the temps should definitely improve. Not sure on whether you need to remove the mobo from the case... I would say that depends on your case and your ability to reach where you need to.
