So.. after being irritated that I couldn't find an AMD mobo capable of PCI-ex at a reasonable price.. I decided to sell my soul and go Intel.. The problem is, since I am new to Intel.. I think I overlooked something rather important, and can't even tell with hindsight if I screwed up or not.

I am beginning to think I can't put that chip on that board... 2.8E Prescott (socket 478) on the V915P that likes LGA775..
Ironically the chips on newegg that are LGA have big red text saying they need LGA775 boards, but not vice versa? Are they backwards compatible(please say yes), or what?

I fought to get this stuff processed so I could get it tomorrow and have a weekend off from work to dive into my new baby.. And I think an oversight will drive me insane.
 

Ok, next time do some research before purchasing expensive equipment. LGA775 processors do NOT have pins, while PGA478 processors DO have pins. They are not backwards/forwards compatible.
 
u need a LGA775 chip to go with a LGA775 mobo and s478 chip only works on a s478 mobo however intel does make a LGA775 version of the 2.8 prescott called the "Pentium 4 520"

Not due in until tomorrow. I am gonna have to drive up to friggin Micro Center and get a non-LGA mobo. That seems to be the easiest route actually.. Although I don't think newegg will take the mobo back(only exchange for same mobo).. I am so mad.. I know it is my own fault, but even the name of the chip didn't say LGA or 478.. No red text like on the other chips.. No warnings on the mobo. I mean.. I pride myself on computer knowledge, but this is the only PC I have attempted to build that has been Intel.. And I only thought AMD was into that whole changing chip designs every 4 seconds.. Oh well :/
 
Did you get your stuff from New Egg? If you did I would call them and tell them you made a mistake and maybe they will be nice and not charge you a restocking fee. Worth a try. I have heard of New Egg doing nice things like that.

 
Agree. I purchased a 4x AGP video card (when I wanted a 8x AGP) from newegg last year and called them up about it. They waived the restocking fee and told me to send it back, no prob.
 
Yeah.. I figured they'd be nice about it. I just need to decide which would be easiest. If I don't open up the mobo at all, I just assume return that. Be a cheaper replacement than buying a new chip at microcenter up in Cincy.. They seem to have some good boards that I should be able to pick up tomorrow before the stuff even arrives.. Then send the chaintech back.. grr 🙁
 
This may also be a stupid question, but there is no "adapter" is there? I know old school celeries had adapters for certain sockets.
 
i know nothing about this but im gonna assume there
A) is no adapter
and
B)if there was would cause a lot of slow-down in processor speed etc.
 
oh.. so there are no Intel boards that have PCI-ex and take 478? I was screwed anyway? Guess I am stuck until I can send the 478 back for an LGA

ah... are you talking about the socket 370 style Celeries going onto a slot 1 motherboard? Those were called slotket adapters. The first computer I built from scratch was like that - I wanted a Pentium III 550E Coppermine (FC-PGA) but the cats meow motherboard of the day was the ASUS P3V4X Via 133A chipset motherboard. So I had to buy a slotket adapter to get the FC-PGA CPU into a slot one mobo. Then I overclocked it to 733 easily using the stock fan. That CPU went cost $215 at the time. That was only about 4 years ago - my how times change.
