Did i just fry my cpu?

I was playing CS the other day when i heard a pop from my pc and it shutdown. I turned off the main power and try turning it on but nothing happened. I was hoping something went wrong with my motherboard since i had a extra asus one lying around, I put the asus mobo in and the green light turned on but when i try to turn on the system nothing happens. Did i fry my cpu, i was under the impression the motherboard would boot up even without a cpu but nothing happens.

Although it could be a few things, my first guess would be power supply. I blew one once, and it had the pop that you say you heard.

faisal,

Are the fans on the powersupply spinning up? It's certainly possible for a dead (or dying) PS to supply a DC volage to the mobo and light the "power on" LED. It just depends on where the fault is. I would try another PS in that computer and see how it goes...

No when i turn on the computer nothing happens, the light in front of the computer doesnt even turn on, i'll get a new powersupply and see if that helps
