did I just commit a no-no on ebay?

anyhow I was looking to buy something

and I waited to near the end to bid. well I waited a bit too long and by the time I hit place bid it had already ended with no bidders.

so I contaced the seller through ebay asking to work something out such as possibly relisting the item.

when I got the duplicate from ebay my reading of ebay's notice at the top makes my contact with them somewhat borderline abuse. so I contacted seller again apologizing for 1st contact and further clarified what I was asking.

Should I worry? Ebay before suspended my account but was quickly reinstated after I proved I'm not who they thought I was(someone else had similar info but ebay won't tell). I had and still have every intention of buying it as I contacted the seller about 3 hours before closing asking about the item specifics and was all set. Plus I don't want to get suspended since I'm currently selling some things.

here is the thing..

the rules state that a seller cannot contact you and offer to sell off ebay... i have not, in all the years i have been trading there, ever read a rule against a buyer contacting the seller. unless they just put it there within the last few months.

i offer to buy outside ebay all the time... from sellers who auction ended without bids and i often email sellers i have bought from before to ask them if they have something i am looking for.

the auction ran.. ebay got their fees... it did not sell, so they wont be losing any FVF fees.

i wouldnt worry about it.

When you do this, you do NOT get any sort of protection. Just FYI.
98% of the time, you are OK. But that 2%, there is not much you can do. eBay won't help you.

i dont see what the problem is, i work an an ebay consignment store and people ask us all the time

we just set up private auctions for them and they buy it ...no big deal at all.

nothing wrong with that.

Once this guy had two items I wanted to buy but I thought his starting bids were too high.

After the auction ended he had no bids on either so I emailed him with an offer for both of them, and he agreed to it.

Its not going through eBay, its just a private transaction.

The FBI usually responds to such illegal trading within 48hrs. Stick around home and go peacefully, it'll go easier on you.

I've contacted many sellers as well. However, unless youre extremely confident in a particular seller for some reason, its always recommended to NOT buy outside of an auction because there is much less protection and accountability.
