Did I installed it right?

I recently installed a Zalman 9500 led with Arctic Silver 5. I really don?t know if I did something wrong, because the temps that I am getting now(40C-45C) are very similar to the ones that I was previously getting with the Amd stock heatsink (43/44C-47/46C). In regards to the thermal compound, I initially applied it as it is instructed in the Zalman website and I obtained the same temperature results; after that, I re-applied-spreading a thin layer of as5 on the processor-, and again got the same temperature results! I know that after a few weeks my temps are going to go down about 2-5C because of the AS5?s time to ?cure.? However, I still think that these temps are to high for the minor over-clock that am doing. Are there any suggestions? Should I even bother to keep this heatsink or should I just return it and keep the stock Amd?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.



P.D. My stock Amd heatsink is not the one with the 4-pipes on the same side.
 
there is alot of variables....
First think I would do is check to make sure you have real good contact from the heatsink to the CPU!!
Sometimes the bottom of the heatsinks are not perfectly flat.
You may need to lapp your heatsinks bottom...
Also then we have air flow issues and ambient temp issues....

I would check to make sure that I am getting real solid contact with the CPU!!!

I used 70% alcohol to clean the surface. Could that be a negative factor? In addition, if the heatsink contact surface is the problem, how can i check if it is even? If it is not even,how can I make it even? Thank you

How you cleaned it and what you cleaned it with is NOT a factor!!
 
Pay no attention to JEDIYoda's mention of the heatsink contact. It is definitely fine considering that Zalman puts a mirror finish on all their heatsinks. However, you should listen to the fact that temperatures have many factors. Now...what you should be telling us is how much airflow that case has. Even better, draw up a diagram. It would also help your cooling if you had a front intake on the same horizontal plane as the Zalman (e.g. Scythe Kama Bay).
 
Well, I have two front intake 80mm fans, 1 rear 120mm exhaust fan, the power supply's exhaust fan, and the hs/f is basically directing all the air towards the rear fan. Btw, I am using a coolmaster centurion 5 case. Thank you guys.
 
Is the Zalman running full speed, and was the stock one doing the same?

Those temps are NOT too high, my 4400X2 idles @ 44 and hits 52 at load with a near identical system (different PSU a P180 otherwise near identical). I got one of the older hotter running ones which is kind of annyoing. Don't worry about it too much.
 
What is ridiculous is that the stock amd is actually not running at full speed, but the Zalman is running at full speed!!!!!!! :|
 
The only problem that I have is that there seems to be no substantial gain in lowering the temps with the my new Zalman heatsink; I just want to know what is causing this.

Actually you should pay attention to what I say about heatsink contact.....
I use my Zalman 9500 on my AMD Gaming Rigg.....

But thats ok...I really don`t know squat about zalman products...

welcome to my life of building a new computer/replacing a hsf. the computer never boots the first time after i do this 🙁
 
Open the case and run the CPU for a few hours. If the ambient temperature is under 25C, then the AVERAGE working temp of the CPU should not exceed 40C. I would expect the CPU temp to hover around 45 to 50C at full load (stock settings).
 
checking contact is easy

lift up your hsf and see if you can see a distint square outline from the residue... if one corner isnt touching for example that will hinder your performance
 
I don't know, I think those temps are a little high myself. Heck, see my sig for my system with the 4400, but basically, this is a HTPC (it is a pizza box case, with a 92mm intake, which has extremely limited airflow from the outside, and 2 60mm fans blowing out, plus the power supply). I am currently at 46 and is usually between 44-51 with an older Zalman.

I seriously think there is something wrong with the numbers you have. Heck, I am replacing the fans in my case to faster/louder models because it runs so hot (as in if I put my hand near the back air outlets it could eventually cook an egg).

I would start with simple things like routing wires and cables away from major air passage-ways and check that all fans in the system are working.
