Well, I replaced my Athlon 650@800 w/ a new 1600+ from NewEgg. I installed it with a new PAL8045 and I had previously installed the new bios to recognize the XP.

Anyway, I boot up and it gives me ALL sorts of problems in WinXP, locks up and when I reboot, it locked up during boot. I tried to reinstall but consistant lock ups upon reinstall, same if I tried to install Win2K. So i remove the c:/windows directory and re-install WinME...all is fine. Try to upgrade to Win2K or XP, and still locked up during install.

I re-installed Athlon 650@800, and installed WinXP with no fuss...do I have a bad Athlon XP, or a bad Epox 8K7A+?

Oh yeah, temps were around 42C with the XP and PAL8045, so that is not the problem.

I have been reading a lot of troubles with your mobo and running WIN XP with an XP AMD. I would hop on over to Epox and see if theres a bios update.

Also I hear that your mobo, an AMD XP, WIN XP, and a GForce 2/3 card dont like each other....this came from the fourms on amdmb.com.

Thanks,
But at the present time, I am only running a Jaton 2MB PCI card at the time. Damn, I hope it's not the mainboard...

I have a 300 Watt power supply from an AOPEN server case. I had a TBIRD-1.4GHZ running fine just last week, running the Athlon 650@800 because the 1.4 was sold and I needed something to hold me over 'til the 1600+ arrived :)

So no, I don't think the PS is an issue ;)

Just got back from PO, sent the 1600+ back to NewEgg via RMA, expect a new one early next week...

sorry for you!

It looks like a software problem to me anyway, I don't think it was the processor.

How could WinMe run fine I don't really know, but.....

Yeah, I was able to install ME, but XP and 2000 would not install...just lock up.

Usul: Probably because WinMe is based on the 95 kernel while XP is built on the 2k kernel...
