Ok. I am working with my neighbor's computer. They have a Compaq presario desktop that i am retrofiting with a new Mobo, etc.

Everything is upand running on a new machspeed board, with an AMD 2200 processor. The only thing that I needed to do was fit some new USB jacks to the front of the case and connet to my new mobo. This was a challenge because I need to rewire the USB jacks (another topic completely).

Anyway, I was testing my USB connectors to the headers on the Mobo. I got a little lazy and unhooked the headers while the mobo was turned on and rearranged the wires to see of the connectors were on the right pins. I know I know...stupid stupid stupid. But I tested a USB device and it work. But the next thing I know, I smelled something funny and noticed that my screen was "garbled". I shut everything down and unplugged.

Now, after a day, I turned it on again to see what happened, and Ive just got a slightly garbled screen. As in, 1/20th or so of the screen is messed up. It's messed up even win I go into the BIOS and also boot into W2k.

So, what did i fry? Did I ruin my mobo? If so, there appears to be NO side affects as I can work on the computer completly, with the exception of some rearranged/garbled pixels on the screen. Any ideas of what I can do to fix this, if possible?

I plugged in a CDROM once while a computer was on and got similar results. I was able to get everything working again after trying several things: I'm not sure what did it, but it finally started working again:

Pulled out the CMOS battery and left it out for a while
Unplugged the computer for a while
Pulled out all of the PCI cards
Tried another video card

It's hard to say whether or not you ruined anything. I'd try the stuff that I mentioned above. Also, if there is a circuit breaker on the PSU, reset it.
