Did I do something wrong???

The OP was not changing lanes till after the finger incident. Some douchebag just HAD to pass the car in front of him, and nearly clipped the OP from behind as he (the other guy) was moving back into the lane he started in. The guy was such a douchebag, he the flipped off the OP, despite that the guy created a potentially unsafe situation.

left lane is for passing. if you drive like a old lady or old man in the left lane then you deserve the finger. i've given my fair share of the finger, especially during rush hour madness. if i've been tailgaiting you for over 5 mins, get the hell out of the way, there is a reason why i am up so close.

in all fairness i live in nyc, i dont know how other people drive in other states, i heard its much more relaxed. when i drove in chicago i was the only mad man on the road and everyone else is calm.

** my commute is 100miles daily, 50 miles each way so i need to drive faster.

The left lane is not for passing on roads like this. If you try to use it that way you are going to have a headache after 5 minutes. The middle lane is the only reasonable lane to use for passing, even then it's a crapshoot. This is not a freeway with exits on the right. It's a road with left turns. The OP has a right to be in the left lane if they will soon be turning left (within a few blocks). Otherwise you are requiring him to be an enormous douche who either changes lanes at mach 12 and cuts people off or holds up traffic in the middle lane as he slows down and prays that somone lets him into the left lane.

Having lived in a few different states, all can I say is this: Seattle drivers suck.

Not compared to Salt Lake City, Maine, Boston, or California drivers. Or Florida. Or fvcking New Jersey (I hate New Jersey).

Finally, some reason.

I regularly drive the road in the OP. You *usually* go faster in the left lane, but if someone wants to turn left all bets are off. I've passed countless people in the right lane...of course, I signal my intentions and leave plenty of room when changing lanes.

While riding my bicycle on two lane roads I have given the finger occasionally to drivers who didn't give me the right of way, or also came within inches of hitting me. They got at least a fraction of what they deserved.

wtf makes you think you have the right of way? you are classified as a motor vehicle, and should act as such. goddamn f'ing bikes....

I've almost been hit by drivers running stop signs and also when they were turning left and I was coming from the other direction and had the right away you moron.

I love how most people who complain about New Jersey drivers are from other states. I've found that in NJ, most people follow the "stay right except to pass" rule. People from other states, who just immediately get in the middle or left lanes and set cruise control at 70, get pissed because they say "I'm already going fast enough, why should anyone go faster than me".

One fundamental rule of driving is not followed which causes so many accidents and a crap load of traffic. YIELD, both when you have a yield sign and on the highway. Stay right, unless you are passing. That simple.

Well, I'll be honest, of the reasons I hate NJ, traffic is possibly the lowest on the scale.😛

For the record I always move over when the right lane is clear, even if there's no traffic behind me.

Now, if I'm passing two semis a minute and no one is behind me, I might stay in the left lane until it opens up a bit more, but if someone is coming up on me I'll move over into the gap and let them past before resuming my overtaking of the semis.

oooooh, I'm interested now... What are the other reasons?

Disclaimer: I grew up in South Jersey at the beach, so while I understand there are parts of New Jersey (any state) that suck, South Jersey at the beach is fabulous.

Lame toll roads, incompetent gas station attendants who spill gasoline all down your car, a bad experience breaking down during a blizzard (2001 IIRC), Nazi cops, and general bandwagon hate.🙂

picture of the finger?

maybe he doesn't like asians? like that guy that got beat up at costco in california...

I don't see anything in the post that is deserving of getting flipped the bird. The other driver, for whatever reason, was clearly just one of those many assholes that thinks you should yeild to them and know their driving patterns and habits and probably need a good at-fault fender bender to help them realize that you shouldn't be an asshole when you are operating a gigantic hunk of metal riding on a dozen or so gallons of gasoline.

Look at the diagram.

OP is in the left lane, not passing.

Not passing = don't be in the passing lane. Keep to the right.

First off... there's no passing lane in a roadway like that because there are exits and entrances to the roadway from both the right and the left... It's not an interstate expressway where the only entrance is from the right. The passing lane on expressways was created to prevent slow moving merging traffic from getting hit by fast moving passing traffic. In a stiuation like this, there is slow moving traffic from both sides. Even if it WAS a passing lane, being in a passing lane is not an excuse to disobey the speed limit, so the other guy breaking the law and speeding doesn't justify him flipping the bird. Wanna prove this? Wait for a cop to get near you and drive in the left lane. I'll pay your ticket if you get pulled over for being in the left lane.

Seond, if the situation is exactly as drawn, he probably would have just passed the car in the right lane himself and could be awaiting a safe chance to merge back over.

Seriously man... there's no place on the road for asshole drivers and the OP is clearly not the one that fits that description.

The flipper sounds like he was the one creating a dangerous situation. Regardless of whether he was morally right or not, safe driving and control of your vehicle is #1 and he lost it.
