Never heard of her, but some quick excerpts from the wiki in Stern's favor

" Plato began having drug and alcohol problems early in life. At age 14, she overdosed on Valium. She admitted to drinking and using recreational drugs during her years on Diff'rent Strokes."

"She was referred to by one caller as an "ex-con lesbian drug addict with mental problems". This provoked a defiant Plato, as she offered to take a drug test on the air (and even placed a large wager on the results of the test to one particularly doubtful caller). Some callers, however, as well as Stern himself, came to Plato's defense by consoling and complimenting her."

" The next day, Plato and Menchaca were returning to California. The couple stopped at Menchaca's mother's home in Moore, Oklahoma, for a Mother's Day visit. [8] Plato went to lie down inside her recreational vehicle parked outside the house and subsequently died of an overdose of Vanadom (Soma) and Lortab. Although accidental, her death at the age of 34 was eventually ruled a suicide under Oklahoma law."

So, basically, the OP was full of crap. The ignore list makes me smile. :)

For those who did not know - She was child star on one of the biggest TV shows of the 80's, different Strokes. Later in life, she has to turn to porn for money. She goes on Howard to promote the movie, and he makes fun of her. She kills herself that night.

you seem to have your facts wrong, at least according to the link you posted...

doesn't sound like he was making fun of her at all, it was some of the callers that were.

The next day, Plato and Menchaca were returning to California. The couple stopped at Menchaca's mother's home in Moore, Oklahoma, for a Mother's Day visit.[8] Plato went to lie down inside her recreational vehicle parked outside the house and subsequently died of an overdose of Vanadom (Soma) and Lortab

doesn't seem to be that same night....

I did not say he killed her. I merely wanted the topic brought up for discussion, particularly by people who did not remember it from when it happened - fresh eyes you know. At the time, the connection was widely discussed. In short, she went on Stern, got made fun of, and killed herself soon after. I brought it up precisely because arguments can be made on both sides, and it is interesting to me.

no he did not. she killed herself.

And I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Almost 11 years to the day of Dana Plato's death, on May 6, 2010, Plato's son Tyler Lambert died at age 25 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in Tulsa, Oklahoma.[20] His grandmother, Joni Richardson, stated that Lambert was experimenting with both drugs and alcohol, which may have contributed to his suicide.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_Plato#cite_note-20

No one thinks Howard knifed her.
It is just a punchy thread title to get people thinking.
The real question is more subtle, that is, "Would she have committed suicide anyway if she had not been humiliated recently on the Howard Stern show?" The Fisher King takes place before this incident, but it explores a similalr idea, that of a Shock Jock making fun of someone, and then that person kills themself.

according to the wiki that you linked, the shock jock did not make fun of her at all, and actually comforted her and was on her side.

I took time out of drafting my "Abraham Lincoln has been Shot" thread to reply to this current event!

Well, I just linked that for folks who have no idea what happened. He did make fun of her, and certainly facilitated her to be in a public arena, where callers could also make fun of her. It was not like she went on Oprah or the View and got coddled by Howard. I remember the interview, and he was brutal at times to her.

I actually listened to that show the day it was recorded (I used to DL the show every day from Usenet because it wasn't broadcast in my area), and living in Oklahoma at the time (I was stationed at Tinker AFB). It was coincidentally just a few days after we had the largest tornado ever recorded on Earth (both in terms of its physical size and its windspeeds) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_Oklahoma_tornado_outbreak

Anyway, no, Howard was not cruel to her in any way. As I recall she didn't seem particularly upset during the interview. Obviously her life was not going well and ultimately her substance addiction took her down. I don't believe there was any connection between the Stern interview and her death.

Personally I think she wanted to go out on a high after her epic performance in "Night Trap" the Sega CD game.. just thinking about that game brings tears to my eyes
