Did Columbus discover America?

I mean we always say he's the first to discover the Americas, but I've seen documentaries talking about other people discovering etc etc.

Ok there's the whole "well Native Americans were here already" argument, but let's throw that out for a second because I think the term "discover" is used to talk about the rest of the world (mainly Europe and Asia) learning about the presence of another 2 continents. There's some book talking about how the Chinese already found America in 1421 and what not. Now I don't know how true these claims are, but what do you guys think?

Discuss.

Depends entirely on how you define it. Did he open it up to Europeans and bring on the age of colonization? Yes. Was he the first human being to sight the lands? Millions of American Aboriginals would disagree.

Some random dude a couple thousand years ago "discovered" America. Columbus was a guy who came here by accident, though he probably can get credit for the mass influx of Europeans that followed him.

Thats cause he was the only one with the gumption to kill everyone and take slaves.

As far as europe was concerned, yet. As far as humanity, no, but then back then anything outside of europe wasn't really humanity anyway.

Columbus discovered the Americas for the modern world and opened it up to Europe.

Yes. it was discovered before, but those discoveries didn't "stick."

I'm pretty sure Columbus didn't kill everyone.

Yes, yes he did. He just wasn't the first to do so. However, his discovery of America had the greatest impact on America of anybody's discovery of America since the prehistroic migrations.

If you'd ever been to Columbus, OH you'd understand people just kill themselves.

Correct, he preferred cutting off assorted extremities.

um, he did but others did too. How come more than one person can't make a discovery? The difference is the scope...

No. And in 1934 Columbus Day became a federal holiday in the US, which is generally considered one of the earlier racketeering events by Italians in America. :p

Sort of. He actually thought that he was in Asia even though they didn't show any signs of Asian culture.
