Unfortunately they did. Hopefully by the time I get into my 40s it will stage a comeback, much like hats as normal male work attire. The first half of the 20th century must've been heaven for those with receding hairlines.

There was a beard comeback around 2005. The retro-70's-cokehead look came back in around then.
