Did Barack "Spread the Wealth" Obama Just Blow the Election?

This could be the opening McCain needs.

Just use Obama's words against him. As the article below says, Americans are overwhelmingly in favor of the government working to improve economic conditions instead of working on wealth redistribution.

McCain should make this the corner stone of his campaign.

No. Really. You're kidding me. Barack Obama actually told that Joe the Plumber guy that he wants to "spread the wealth around." What, did Obama just get done reading the Wikipedia entry on Huey "Share the Wealth" Long or something? Was he somehow channeling that left-wing populist from the Depression? Talk about playing into the most extreme stereotype of your party, that it is infested with socialists.

A while back I chatted with a University of Chicago professor who was a frequent lunch companion of Obama's. This professor said that Obama was as close to a full-out Marxist as anyone who has ever run for president of the United States. Now, I tend to quickly dismiss that kind of talk as way over the top. My working assumption is that Obama is firmly within the mainstream of Democratic politics. But if he is as free with that sort of redistributive philosophy in private as he was on the campaign trail this week, I have no doubt that U of C professor really does figure him as a radical. And after last night's debate, a few more Americans might think that way, too. McCain's best line: "Now, of all times in America, we need to cut people's taxes. We need to encourage business, create jobs, not spread the wealth around."

And by the way, I just noticed that the IBD/TIPP poll, the most accurate in 2004, has McCain down by just 3 points. If the contest is perceived by the voters as a contest between a wealth redistributor and a wealth creator, then it could be a long night come Nov. 4. This is still a center-right country, gang. Note this Gallup poll from June:

When given a choice about how government should address the numerous economic difficulties facing today's consumer, Americans overwhelmingly?by 84% to 13%?prefer that the government focus on improving overall economic conditions and the jobs situation in the United States as opposed to taking steps to distribute wealth more evenly among Americans.

There you go.

Go ahead. That's exactly what needs to be done to bolster the Middle Class.

Nope!

Edit: Pro-Jo... you try so hard. Why not put all this energy into something more constructive?

It's too late. That's a policy difference and if people don't care by now they won't come election day.

It's going to take a serious gaffe or a sex tape to take Obama down at this point IMHO.

So Obama's a Marxist now? Because all the other weak accusations and unbased attacks worked out well for the McCain campaign? That will totally change where this election is going. (hint: it's not McCain)

Progressive taxation is not socialism.

As strongly as I am against nationalized health care, I have to say that this is just a completely stupid comment.

Nationalize banking and Wall Street? Oh, no big deal.

Nationalize healthcare? OMG TEH COMMUNISM!! :|

The economy is not infinite. The creation of new jobs and taxation are both methods of spreading the wealth with different approaches.

I doubt Joe the Plumber will last much longer than a 24 hour news cycle. People were already tired of him by the end of last night's debate, despite what the networks who are camped out in front of his house think.

I was strongly against the bi-partisan bailout. We have printed and borrowed money into oblivion. That doesnt mean I cant be against more socialist undertakings.

If people really want to improve the economy, cut the south and the mid west out of the union.
In some states, they receive upwards of 3 dollars per every tax dollar they collect. They nation is basically supported by the northeast, Texas, and California. If you're against socialism, you should be against the the teat sucking that most of the states are doing. We should go firmly capitalist, leave the south and midwest to starve and have hundreds of thousands die of natural disasters. But it's ok, capitalism will ensure prices will fall so they can survive, they may not buy hdtvs but the breadbasket will be damn cheap to leave in. Better economic conditions for the wealthy states, and nice mansions to those who want to live in the country.

I still think it's funny that "Joe" owes $1200 in back taxes. Why is he so worried about taxes when he isn't going to pay them anyway?
