I was surprised they brought out the guest so early last night, it's usually after the half-way mark on my Tivo, but this one was only about 1/3 of the way into the show. Maybe this is a new format, or maybe it was because of the guest. The new desk and studio also give a more "confrontational" feel to the interviews, instead of the old "big comfy chair" set. I like it.

Mr. Goldberg has a set of brass ones to visit Jon to discuss his right-wing book. Jon may be mostly non-partisan, but his audience surely isn't. The guy played pretty well, but you can tell he had some scripted talking points he was just trying to get out. This was no ass-kissing interview, either. Jon stuck to his guns and said "I think you're wrong" many times.

And here's a :cookie: for you dolts who think TDS is just some liberal mouthpiece. And another :cookie: for those who think TDS is a bastion of fair news reporting and not a comedy show.

I pretty much agree with your take on the interview, but I also think you might be selling TDS and Jon Stewart short in the real news department. It IS a comedy news show of course, but the root of the comedy is in real news, and real analysis of the news. It's not just funny because the have hilarious graphics and they make fun of everyone (Karl Rove as "the only man in America with flesh colored hair" had me rolling), but because it's really pretty good commentary and presentation.

That's not to say that they can be a replacement for real news sources, but as far as spending 1/2 hour on politics and news goes, you could do a lot worse, from both an informative and entertainment perspective.

I definitely agree about you regarding the last part. Anyone here try to watch cable news on Sunday? It was as if the only thing going on in the entire world was the hurricane.

i'm sure that helped Goldberg sell more books. Thanks Jon.

Somehow I don't think a book about how Al Franken and 99 other evil-doers (including Jimmy Carter, the Sith Lord himself) are destroying America is exactly the kind of book the Daily Show viewers are going to rush out and buy.

Who really cares in any case? It's not my business/problem if idiots want to buy books written by other idiots. If Goldberg or Ann Coulter or whoever can make money telling certain people what they want to hear, more power to them.

Exactly. And the Daily Show did a very good job pointing out how stupid that all was.

I don't have cable. I dont have access to CNN, Headline News, CSPAN, you name it, whatever.

SO. lately I have been getting TDS from 'other' sources. Good show.

MY POINT IS

The other day, I was up at the in-laws and my father-in-law is a big news watcher, he can sit on his big butt and watch headline News all day long. I tried to sit through some of the cable news and it just blew me away how overly-dramatic it is. With the worthless reporting, horrible HORRIBLE anchors, and just bottom dwelling, cater to the lowest denominator type of news stories...ugh.

I lean more towards Jim Leher and other PBS news broadcasts. I am not saying it is any better, but at least it isnt in hyper-media overdrive like other broadcasts.

I will never tune into a cable news network for actual news OR actual news reporting.

i think he was referring to 2 specific people mainly (goldberg and ann "satan" coulter). i'm sure if you give him a chance he can provide you with people who he disagrees with and he doesn't think are idiots.

therefore anyone who thinks the book is cool enough to buy is an idiot.

It's definitely not news. He only has a half hour in which to entertain his audience. As Stewart himself is definitely left leaning, his audience is left leaning as well. Currently, what entertains the left is making fun of the right, so that's what he does. He doesn't report any more factual information than is necessary to make fun of someone. That's entertainment, not news. News is reporting the facts with as little personal opinion as possible. You could make the argument that there is very little true news anymore, and I might be inclined to agree with you.

I  TDS.

The comment about his stuff being written is short-sighted. The guy is quick, very quick, and that shows.

And, color me crazy, but the only reason that "making fun of the right" is the majority of the quips is because a) right-wing house b) right-wing senate c) right-wing presidency. True or no, I'd like to believe they would rip on a left-wing administration as well. When they find the funny, they point it out. Along the way, they do a pretty damn good job of actually sharing information that some would arguably qualify as news. I feel that if I read my favorite mag "The Week" and watch TDS, I'm sitting pretty as far as a general awareness goes.

They've got a great argument when critics come a calling. They're a fake news show on Comedy Central... If they inform a bit along with entertaining, all the better.

My bad, actually. I just thought it would be a good place for a Futurama take-off ("idiots who need gifts for other idiots"). There are certainly people I think are idiots, Goldberg and Coulter among them, but it's not because they disagree with me. Calling their readers idiots was simply a turn of phrase that I found pretty funny. While I don't think buying those books for political insight is something I agree with, I don't think they are all idiots because of it. As for "all people that don't agree with me", as anyone who's been reading P&N for a while can tell you, I really try to stay away from personal insults and over-generalizations and stick to the topics. I don't always do a good job at this, but I try.

Now that I've been properly scolded, perhaps I can return the favor. The smug superiority thing you've got going on here in P&N is getting a little old. Should I have generalized people who buy those books as idiots? Probably not. But being that I'm not 12 years old, and given the rest of my posts on P&N, I probably realized that already. Wouldn't your posts have been better spent discussing the topic instead of playing the name-calling-police? And if you ARE going to do that, wouldn't a post about how all Muslims are terrorists or how some group hates America, or any of the much worse posts have been a better place to do that?

I thought the Goldberg dude did pretty good. Though JS kinda put the kibosh on the book by pointing out the difference between Hollywood and Washington, Goldberg came across as Intelligent and thoughtful as well. I certainly won't be buying the book(hardly ever buy books anyways :D ), but once again JS has shown the utter lack of substance from the Anti-"Liberals" crowd.

at least attempt to stay on topic (a little bit) versus simply attacking people. you have so far added very little actual content to any posts but instead simply start p!ssing matches with people. P&N is normally a pretty rough place yes, but generally the hostility has some focus on the topic of discussion.

yes - i need to locate a vid of this debate when i get home tonight - i've read the transcript and it was pretty funny. i caught the rebroadcast of the DS last night and it was decent but not quite as good as i expected. the guest did a good job of sounding convincing but unfortunately he was spouting BS. he argues that he takes issue with profanity on TV and activist judges but seemingly has no way to defend people like al franken. i've never known al franken to be particularly obscene on TV/radio and he certainly doesn't have much in the way of power and ability to change. Most people barely know who al franken is nor have they read any of his books. he hardly has the clout or vulgarity to be in the top 100 regardless of if you agree with him or not.
