Did anyone see Radiohead on SNL a few weeks ago?

Was the lead "singer" having a stroke on stage? Is there something mentally wrong with him or something physically wrong with his eyes making him unable to open them during a song? Is that how they normally sound b/c that singer sounded like a cat getting raped by a monkey.

Radiohead is amazing. They are one of the groups that the more you listen to their music the more you love it. I remember thinking the same as you, but now I buy every album and see them at every show that comes near me.

They use a lot of odd sounds and beats, but it all works somehow. And I think his voice is actually amazing.

Maybe there is something to that. A lot of people hated Layne Staley's voice too but I grew to love it. Same with that dude from Smashing Pumpkins.

Legit question.....Is Radiohead one of those druggie groups like Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Phish, etc. Like do most people who like their music tend to listen to it while high?

I wouldn't classify them like that at all, no.

I've never listened to it high, but at the shows you have the regular pot smoke clouds, I wouldn't say more or less than any other show. I know when I was in college 10 years ago everyone listened to them, I don't know if it's really a college band these days though. I wouldn't put them in the same category as the dead /phish, etc...

The lead singer is always like that. I think he's more of an alcoholic type. Anyway, regardless of the fact that his physical mannerisms were the same, his voice sounded TERRIBLE and so did the band overall compared to previous TV and live performances I've seen. Then again, this new album isn't that great to start with.

They sounded fine to me. That's how Yorke rolls ... you have obviously never seen them before.

Thom Yorke was born with one eye closed and had multiple surgeries to repair it as a child, leaving it partially closed much of the time.

No, he wasn't having a stroke.

No, Radiohead is not a drug-oriented band. They are, far and away, the most critically-acclaimed band on earth and have a fiercely loyal fan base (as evidenced by their decision to release In Rainbows on a pay-what-you-want basis a few years ago). Like most interesting artists, they are polarizing and not to everyone's taste.

If you think Thom Yorke sounded like a cat being raped by a monkey I'd have to question your hearing, but Radiohead may just not be your cup of tea.

I like Radiohead but he sounded like a cap being raped by a monkey on SNL. Then again, many bands sound bad-to-horrible on SNL but great in other live venues.

fanboy much?

I am a big fan, and have been for many years, but it is also factually accurate to say they are the most critically-acclaimed currently active band on earth. If you can name another band that has engendered more respect among journalists and peers, by all means do so. I am not always in the mood for Radiohead and love a lot of other music, but I do find almost every other band less interesting musically.

May be a fanboy, but it's true nonetheless. And yes, Thom Yorke did not sound very good during that performance. I'm not quite sure what was up... may have been the earpieces or something. Either way, he sounds much better than that normally. I've seen them perform several times and I've been impressed with his vocals every time. He's just an interesting character. Thom's always been that way.

If you want to see some awesome live Radiohead... watch this live session they did. It's in HD and Thom sounds great in it. This is some of their newer stuff, before The King of Limbs... great material.

so, in you guys' opinions, second most acclaimed band in the world? U2?

yeah i think i'm gonna use actual sonic criteria to judge my music.

Might be, though in my view U2 has been artistically stagnant for a long time (though one could legitimately argue that they have inherited the throne from the Rolling Stones in terms of being respected and productive over a very long period). R.E.M. (who I also don't love) would have been high on the list until last week, when they ceased to be active. The Pixies would also be on the short list when they happen to be on tour at any given moment.

Obviously everyone has his own personal preference. I was always a punk rock kid and was raised in the height of the American hardcore era, so that sensibility stays with me. My other favorite active bands (e.g., Queens of the Stone Age) are much simpler than Radiohead, but ultimately I find Radiohead the most fascinating musically. I imagine it's because they all have a conservatory background and thus their knowledge of music theory and composition is much more expansive than just about any other band (how many bands' lead guitarist is also the composer in residence for the BBC?), but their music is remarkably rich and complex, and scratches an itch for me.

Yes, I watched it, and it was good.

Thom Yorke being Thom Yorke, who would have guessed it.

I do have to say, I liked Radiohead a lot more when they were more melodic. IMO, "The Bends" is by far their best album.

Ha...I remember seeing that while laying in bed, and my wife and I slowly turned our heads and looked at each other with our left eyebrows raised like something out of a sitcom.

We then screwed like rabbits through the whole performance, so that's all I remember about it.

To me:

1) OK Computer
2) In Rainbows
3) Kid A
4) The Bends
5) Amnesiac
5a) (since it's not a Radiohead album) The Eraser
6) Hail to the Thief
7) King of Limbs
8) Pablo Honey

I agree with most of that, but I'd actually put Pablo Honey above King of Limbs... KoL is definitely they're more polarizing album, and I've got to say, my least favorite. I only like 3 songs on there really. OK Computer and In Rainbows are pure audio magic.
