The thread about the rumor of Intel buying Nvidia made me wonder........

Is there a way to find out what 1000 shares bought at the IPO for $23.00 would be worth today?

I know the stock has split 2/1 several times, hoping some lucky bastard bought and held and can provide some numbers.

I wanted to buy in so badly but at that point I had zero dollars and no way to get in :(

If I had been able to find a way I wanted to buy 1000 shares, I'm not sure, but I think I would be filthy stinking rich by now $$$$$$$

The long-awaited public offering from graphics company Nvidia Corp. is set for this Friday, Jan. 22, according to sources close to Nvidia.

According to previous financial statements filed by Nvidia, Santa Clara, Calif., the company plans to offer 3.5 million shares at between $7 to $9 for an estimated market capitalization of $228.5 million.
NVidia went ahead with its IPO on Friday, as predicted by The Register (see earlier story). The day's trading saw the $12 shares begin trading at $21, rise to over $23 and close at just under $20. Not bad for a stock initially believed to be issue at just $7. ®

yahoo finance charts says it's had 3 2-1 splits. so that 1000 shares would be 8000 shares @ $30. So $23k -> $240k

I bought NVDA today at $30.41 today and almost immediately it dropped like $0.20. Son of a b*tch!

EDIT: On a side note, anyone knows what happens to my stock if INTC does buy NVDA?

Depends on the deals of the merger. It'll go through a re-org and you might get like get something like 3:2 where for every 100 shares of NVDA you get 150 shares of INTC. Or they may do a 1:1 and cash. Just really depends on what INTC decides to do and how much they offer per share for NVDA.

Initial Public Offering

Cool. Now what does that mean, lol.

it's a company's first sale on the primary market.

means that the company is going public, for the first time. it issues stock. the stock is underwritten by a team of brokerage houses. the brokerage houses line up their clients to subscribe to the stock issuance. those clients buy the shares and can later sell them.

elfenix's best financial tip: get on that client list. because the brokerage houses don't want to be left holding any unsold stock they undervalue it a bit, so it pretty much always sells at a premium once it hits the secondary market.

I wasn't in at the IPO, but I did buy two lots in the summer of 1999 that I have held since then. My cost basis is ~$2.47/share and my gain is at 1205% as of today. I've already watched it soar once, at the original Xbox annoucement, and then drain away over 2002. Now I'm finally getting back to near those all-time highs. Irrational it may be, but I'm considering this stock my Microsoft and plan to hold it very long term (assuming they stay independent!). Time will tell. :)

I was going to dump 2K into this but couldn't get an account opened in time and probably couldn't have gotten in anyways. Those numbers really really really hurt.

Hmmm... let's calculate:

$2.47 per share * 1000 shares = $2470

x / $2470 - 1 = 1205%
x = ((1205% / 100) + 1) * $2470 = $32,233.50

In this case, it doesn't matter. You know the % gain and initial investment. Given that, you can calculate the current value.

I did. I participated in Goggle's and Amazon's IPOs as well.

But remember, these are the good stories. You never hear people talking about the bad stories.
