Did anyone ever figure out what that jewel in the middle of diablo2 chat screen did?

They are STILL asking this every once in a while on the forums. And every time a Blizzard rep. comes in and gives the same response they have been giving for years. Something like "We cannot reveal the purpose of the gem at this time, but we can say that it is working perfectly and has more than exceeded our expectations."
In other words, it tricked the noobs.
