Did Alawi really say this on Jon Stewart???

I was driving along and I think I heard them say that Alawi (Former Iraqi interim President) say that in Iraq they have 10 Virgina Techs every day.
Can anyone verify this? Did I hear it wrong?

It's actually 35 Virginia Techs per day, every day, in Iraq.

Alawi must have been lowballing it.

He remarked how the country is in mourning over the VT event and asked Alawi about the deadly violence in Iraq and how Iraqis deal with it, are they basically numb? etc.

Alawi was responding directly to Stewart question.

I don't think he said 10 Virginia Techs a day, I think he said they have a Virginia Tech virtually every day. I could be wrong.

100 dead per day in Iraq, on average, according to the UN.

Iraq 26.8 million national population.

100 / 26,800,000 = .00000373

US 298.4 million national population.

.00000373 * 298,400,000 = ~1113 equivalent deaths per day when taking population size into account.

1113 / 32 (VT death total) = ~35

If I lost you somewhere in those equations, I suggest retaking 5th grade mathematics.

Yeah, there is a clip of it on crooksandliars, but I don't really feel like looking for it, if someone wants to grab it. I don't remember him adding some number to it, but rather just saying they have that level of violence every day.

Yeah, it was so obvious in your original post that you were normalizing the figures by the populations of the countries

Frankly, I agree somewhat with this comparison. Israel makes a big deal about terrorism there, but more people are shot in Los Angeles than are blown up in all of Israel each year. Likewise, it is a sad and terrible fact that about 100 Iraqi people die in Iraq every day. People are people. Anyone who claims different is a monster IMHO.

He was asked a very specific question about how they deal with the tragedies every day by jon, VT was part of the question.

Allawi didnt just pull it from the sky.
