(FROM HOLLYWOOD REPORTER) ? Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Bros. are teaming for a live-action adaptation of anime classic Akira, which started out as a manga in 1988 and was adapted into an animated film by Katsuhrio Otomo that same year. The original story was set in ''New Tokyo'' in 2019, after a nuclear war. A teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment that taps latent powers, and the gang leader is forced to try and stop the destruction that lies in his wake. The new adaptation will be set in ''New Manhattan,'' a city rebuilt by Japanese money. DiCaprio will produce via Appian Way. Ruairi Robinson is set to make his feature directorial debut on what is expected to be a two-part epic. The first film is tentatively scheduled for a summer 2009 release. (Hollywood Reporter)

There is no way they are going to do the end scenes. I doubt they will even do the hallway scene, or the nightmares. I have a really hard time believing it will be similar at all.

"KANEDA!"
"TETSUO!"
"KANEDA!"
"TETSUO!"
...

could be good, depending if he's actually involved with it, or just said 'hey a live-action Akira would be cool, someone make it happen'

Thats odd. It seems pretty much everything he has been involved with, while not 100% my cup of tea, has been mild to wildly successful... including from a critics stand point.

Could be cool, but if it westernized it will fail. There is just something about it and the character names that. I'd hate for the line, "Kaneda HELP MEEEE!!!" to turn into "John HELP MEEE!!!!"

With the one exception of Blood Diamond (sorta) and the Departed (kinda), I really don't like his acting.

Could be cool. Leo's a great actor and I've enjoyed his work. Looking forward to this.

They need Alfonso Cuaron to direct it, then it could be good. Going to have to have a lot of CGI though... not sure if they can make it look realistic.

I hope they focus on the manga more. I'm not normally one who spews the "book was better" BS but in this case, I really was quite surprised at how much better the book was in terms of storyline. The movie is still quite good too, but the story didn't have quite the same depth. The anime was better in other ways, though.

Well a LOT more happened in the books... they basically removed the second half of the story for the movie except for parts of the very end. Heck they basically removed the character the manga/movie is named after :p

So the movie will likely be even worse...
